The North Laine area of Brighton and Hove is a bit like Club Tropicana because it perfectly encapsulates everything that's great about the city and 'all that's missing is the sea'. It can't guarantee sunshine but it can give you enough fun for everyone with its huge variety of shops and activities ranging from high culture in the Dome Theatre to dirty jokes in the Komedia.
The North Laine is famous for its shops. There are shops there that you wouldn't find the like of anywhere else. A ten minute stroll would take you past designer shoe shops, high end clothes boutiques, a flea market, a fudge shop, a kitchen shop, a bonsai shop, a comic book shop, a gothic jewellery shop, vintage clothes shops, funny t-shirt shops, educational toy shops, a cyberpunk clothing shop, a bead shop, a bicycle shop, fashionable interiors shops, artisan bakeries, an ice cream shop, a milkshake shop, a bagel shop, a modern art shop and many others.
Food and Drink
Pubs are a-plenty in this part of town and there are all types of cafes from greasy spoons to vegan health food cafes. The restaurants aren't bad either.
Entertainment and Culture
This area is home to the Royal Pavilion, the Dome, the Theatre Royal, the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery and the Jubilee Library. There's plenty of high brow culture to choose from. For the more down to earth entertainments, there is the Komedia which is a comedy club, cinema and music venue all in one.
Most people know that the Royal Pavilion was commissioned by that same Prince Regent made famous by Black Adder and well known for finding new and thoroughly decadent ways of spending public money. The Pavilion was such an endevour. It was completed in three phases and was really just somewhere for the Prince and eventually King George to go to be naughty. Its Indian and Chinese style decor was very fashionable at the time. Now it welcomes visitors from all over the world but you get a discount if you live in Brighton.
The North Laine has a slightly less ostentatious history as it used to be a notorious slum and was infamous for crime right up into the 1960s!
You'll find all sorts going on in this part of town with cultural events taking place at the Dome all year round and the smaller venues host music events, poetry events, theatre events and many other events. Keep watch on our North Laine page to see what's on.
