Local businesses rely on local custom to survive and there is no doubt that many are finding it tough going, local competition is fierce and internet buying from UK suppliers continues to suck business out of island. The sad news that Le Gallais are to close their furniture store after many years, with competition from the internet being given as one of the reasons, is an example of what can happen to even well established local businesses if they do not give local people a compelling reason to buy from them.
In spite of the attractions of internet buying I am sure that most people would actually prefer to buy locally, provided they can buy what they want at a price that is competitive. It is much better to be able to examine and physically check out a potential purchase rather than to buy from a small picture on the internet, also if there are reasons to return the item this is much easier done locally.
TheBestofJersey is proud to feature a number of excellent local businesses that sell items that are suitable as Christmas gifts or provide services that are required during the Festive Season, many of these also have Special Offers available at this time.
Over the course of the time between now and Christmas I will be writing about these businesses and providing details of why you should consider checking out what they can offer.
I hope that local people will buy locally where possible and I would be very interested to hear of any positive experiences that people have had when dealing with local businesses in the run up to Christmas. I would be very happy to spread the word about good local businesses, even if not one of our ‘featured’ businesses.
