The people of Jersey are noted for their generosity and the many charities and charity appeals are promoted in the island are generally extremely well supported. However these are difficult times for many families and charitable donation is an item of expenditure that is at risk when the family budget is under pressure.
While I hope that the many worthy charities that ask for support from the Jersey public continue to do well I would like to specifically draw attention to a Charity that we all know which has just launched it’s 2011 appeal. I hope that the people of Jersey will continue to show their support.
The 2011 The Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal was launched on Thursday 27 October and is the culmination of The Royal British Legion’s 90th anniversary year. Over this year, the aim is to raise £90 million, £1 million for every year of their existence. But to achieve this aim they need the support of ordinary people across the UK (and Jersey) by getting involved, either directly or by attending their events or just by making a slightly larger donation than usual when buying their Poppy to help them reach their target.
Recent appeals have emphasised the increasing need to help the men and women who are serving today - the Afghan generation - as well as ex-Service people and their dependants.
The services of The Royal British Legion are needed all year so please help their fundraising by making a donation, volunteering your time or displaying your support.
For more information please visit their Support us section on the Appeal website.
The Poppy Appeal achieved a record breaking total of £36 million in 2010 and The Royal British Legion hope to improve this yet again this year with a fundraising goal of £40 million.
If you know of any events or fund raisers that are planned in support of the Poppy Appeal in Jersey please let me know and I will be pleased to add this to our Events Page.
