Football World Cup
31st March 2010

Now I have to admit that I am not a great sports fan but even I am quite excited about the 2010 Football World Cup as I think that for the first time in ages England have a genuine chance of doing really well. If Rooney can maintain his current form and we have a bit of luck who can deny that England are in with a chance, let's hope the ankle injury he picked up last night will not be a problem!

The first hurdle is to progress beyond the initial Group stage, England are in Group C and are competing against Algeria, Slovenia and USA. Not the strongest of opposition so progression to next round does not look too difficult.

There are 8 Groups to start with and the winner and runner up in each Group progresses into the last 16.

For those who feel the need to get the initial group stage games into their diaries the details are as follows:

England v USA, 12th June 2010
England v Algeria, 18th June 2010
England v Slovenia, 23rd June 2010

After the Group stage there are 8 games between 26th June and 29th June that will be between the winner of each Group with the runner up in another Group. Assuming that we progress beyond the Group stage those that will be of interest to England supporters would be:

26th June, Winner of Group C v Runner up Group D
27th June, Winner of Group D v Runner up Group C

After that, we will need to wait and see how we do before we will know if England are still in the running. It has been a very long wait since 1966, with many false dawns along the way, so let’s remain calm and hope for the best.

If you are thinking about where to watch the games then personally I would recommend the Lamplighter in Mulcaster Street, they have multiple screens that will be showing the games and as this is very much a sports pub and there is sure to be a great atmosphere on match days.

If you have any other venues that you would recommend please post a response on this blog.
