While I am sure that most local people are aware of the Itex walk, it’s correct name is the ‘Itex-Rotary’ walk, this is because it became so successful that it reached the stage in 2001 where Itex needed help with the organisation and the Rotary de la Manche have shared the organisation with them ever since.

This will be the 22nd Itex-Rotary round the island walk, those brave souls taking part will be faced with a journey of 48.1 miles, with some very tough sections, particularly along the north coast cliff paths. I wish them all well and hope that they generate loads of sponsorship money in recognition of their efforts. Normally approximately 50% of those taking part finish, some walking into the night before they finish.

The very first ‘Itex’ walk was in 1991 with a grand total of 15 people taking part, over the years the event grew to become a local institution and in recent years in the region of 1500 people have started. Over the last 21 years the sponsorship money raised has supported well over 118 local charities with 14,785 Walkers taking part who have managed to raise over £1.6m!!

Jersey charities being supported in 2012 are 10th Jersey (St Brelade) Scout Group, Jersey Cheshire Home and Jersey Trees for Life.  In addition another 12 local organisations will benefit from the donations raised by the walkers and their numerous supporters.

In addition to taking part in the full Walk walkers now have an opportunity to join the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey on a personal challenge to walk around the Island in consecutive stages over four years.  Each stage of the LG Challenge is walked in parallel with those walkers attempting the full distance in one go.

For 2012 the LG challenge will cover the second section of the Around the Island Walk, covering the distance from St Catherine’s Checkpoint to Les Fontaines Checkpoint which is a distance of 10.9 miles! The LG walk will begin at 6am from the St Catherine's checkpoint.

If you are taking part I wish you well and hope that you enjoy the challenge, please email me ( and let me know how you did and I will do a follow up blog with some stories of the 2012 walk.
