It’s really good to hear about business members of ‘thebestofjersey’ getting the recognition which they so richly deserve, I was particularly pleased when Paul Harding from BDK Architects told me about how well they did at the recent Jersey Design Awards evening.

Paul's overview of the event is as follows:

This event was held on Friday 25th June 2011 and Senator Freddie Cohen commended BDK for their Dessous Les Hougues project at L’Etacq project, saying – “It is a really nice lovely scheme”, adding it was a beautiful carefully crafted exemplar of traditional Jersey architecture with local relevance. The Environment Minister went onto say "Jersey Architects are delivering - and I really mean this - buildings on a par with the best in Europe"

BDK also won People’s Choice runner-up Award, being placed equal second best project by the general public out of all 104 Design Awards entries.

Paul Harding commented “This is fantastic for BDK to have one of our projects in the top three schemes most liked by the general project out of all the extremely high quality entries for the Design Awards.”

During Architecture Week 2011 the general public gave BDK a large number of votes for their Dessous Les Hougues project placing BDK equal second in the Peoples Choice Award – placing them in the top three schemes most liked by the general public who visited the Exhibition of Jersey Design Award entries.

The President of the Association of Jersey Architects, BDK’s principal Paul Harding, gave the closing address, saying -

“We have had a very successful Week, highlighting Jersey enjoys a talented selection of local Architects who are delivering unique, but locally relevant, high quality architecture. I look forward to our locally grown architectural talent being cherished and nurtured.”

“I commend Senator Cohen on his mission shared with us to raise design standards, which this Week has shown we are undoubtedly achieving. I welcome his initiative of creating the Jersey Architecture Commission, that provides a valuable forum.”

“Our Association looks forward to the future with confidence and working with Planning Minister’s and their Officers to promote high quality architecture in the Island, rooted in the past with local relevance but responding to, reflecting, and enhancing our 21st Century natural and built environment needs and aspirations.”

I would like to thank Paul for letting me know about BDK's success, personally all the BDK designs that I have seen have impressed me, mainly because I feel they are in keeping with the areas in which they will be built, where a traditional type development is most in keeping with the area, this is what they deliver, where a more modern approach is appropriate then this may be the approach they adopt. Well done to the team at BDK!
