Both these businesses have been active in Jersey for many years and both have been hugely impacted by advances in technology.
If we go back 10 or 15 years Telefitters were fitting aerials on private homes to pick up 4 channels via the analogue signal and fitting out hotels to receive in-room TV signals. Now it’s all about Digital TV and satellite installations to pick up the 100’s of channels now available over Sky and Freestat.
For The Digital Photo Centre the digital age was still to dawn and they received huge numbers of 35mm photo film for development from both locals and visitors. Now everyone uses Digital cameras and the development of 35mm film is a niche activity. As a result The Digital Photo Centre has re-invented itself and is now the Jersey home for all digital imaging needs.
The relentless advance of technology has been either a direct or significant reason why so many of the businesses in these sectors to have disappeared over the past few years, the fact that Telefitters and The Digital Photo Centre have continued to thrive is a credit to both management and staff. The willingness to embrace new technology, invest in up to date equipment and train staff so that they have up to date skills has been essential and must play a large role in why the businesses continue to thrive. However while these developments have been essential they have depended on the staff for delivery and if customer service had not been a key theme to both businesses I doubt that they would still be around today.
