We travelled to this hotel with two friends for a mid week break and was glad we did. We found the food was to our liking, the entertainment was good, The rooms were clean and comfortable. All the staff were helpful and good at there jobs, Ivana our waitress was great. It was a bit hot in the rooms and the TV needs upgrading but these are minor things.

The Burlington Hotel Eastbourne is an excellent position overlooking the Pier with glorious views over the sea front. We paid an extra £98 for a sea view and we experienced some incredible sunrises and glorious colours in the evening. We stayed 7 nights and paid an additional £70.00 for a standard plus room, the total cost for the week was £956.00. The room was spacious, the bed comfortable and both bedroom and bathroom very clean. The young lady who cleaned our room was very conscientious, I saw her on several occasions cleaning other rooms and she really cleaned them thoroughly, towels, tea/coffee were replaced without asking. As with most of the rooms that Shearings 'update' they seem not to finish properly i.e the hair dryer should have been wall mounted but I suspect the stud wall wouldn't have supported it so it was left in the drawer, I found it impossible to manage so I had to buy a hand held one, additionally only one bedside lamp and no light over the dressing table. Because it's an old building the windows do 'rattle' in the night and you do have to be careful how wide you open the windows as we returned on the first night to find a pigeon had flown into the bathroom and it took some persuading to leave! The dining room although it needs refurbishing does have a faded charm, it is however like most of the hotel very hot with little ventilation. Beatrice(?) was our waitress for the first two nights followed by George both of whom worked very hard in a friendly and efficient way. Breakfast is self service with plenty of choice and on the whole works very well, except for the toasters, you see numerous piles of burnt toast! and having your tea or coffee poured into a mug on your table from flasks is not good. The evening meals can be 'hit and miss' sometimes the kitchens appear to struggle and the waiters apologise for often long delays. On a couple of occasions the vegetables were cooked to pulp whilst the guests on the next table complained their meal was completely cold. Reception staff are very helpful and friendly and the bar staff are incredible, one tall fair haired young man was so cheerful and helpful to guests who struggled to carry their drinks. Because it was so hot in the hotel we would have preferred after our evening meal to have sat in the seats close to the main doors(which were mostly open) with glass of wine but it was impossible to enjoy because just outside the doors was a partially enclosed 'balcony' which was used by the smoking guests.I completely respect that some guests enjoy smoking but with little ventilation the entrance area smelled like an ashtray, one guest even smoked in the toilet of the ballroom, this was picked up by the entertainment lady but the following night when she was not on the duty the smell of cigarette smoke was apparent again. Even during the day leaving the hotel you had to push your way through the smokers, on one occasion I counted over 12 guests and as one guest was in a wheelchair it wasn't even easy to get out. The steps and outside the hotel are quite disgusting with discarded cigarette ends etc and really do need a good clean. However, on the whole we did enjoy our holiday

A good old-fashioned sea front hotel - in a grade II* listed building, mentioned and praised by Pevsner no less!

Everywhere looking a little bit tired, but all public areas clean and tidy.

We had a seaview room - it was huge, clean, very comfortable and for the class of hotel, well equipped. The bathroom was a good size, if a bit tired with flaws in the floor covered with gaffer tape, and the shower dripped constantly.

Food was included in our deal and was good.

A decent choice, for dinner, including vegetarian options, starter main and desert. Food imaginative, well cooked and nicely presented. Portions were not huge, but with 3 courses we found them perfectly adequate.

Drink was exorbitantly priced, but tap water provided cheerfully and without question for meals

Breakfast was excellent too - plenty of choice of well cooked hot food, replaced regularly to prevent drying out. Only downside was the rather nasty plastic bread - just about OK for toast, but it would have been nice to have had something a bit less synthetic.

The highlight was the staff. Restaurant staff in particular were delightful - attentive, friendly, very efficient and very hard working. With a full dining room and some of the hottest days of the year they kept going with a smile and a friendly world. Can't praise them enough

Other staff also very good, both housekeeping, who cleaned thoroughly, and front of house who were very helpful when needed.

All in all a hotel I'd recommend with only minor reservations - surely it wouldn't be THAT difficult to fix a dripping shower and mend floors properly - gaffer tape does spoil the effect!

The Sea View is well worth the upgrade, spectacular views to the pier and Beachy Head. However, the weather was very warm during our visit and we had to have the bedroom windows open (no air con of course) and this let in a lot of noise from traffic along the coast road from quite early in the morning.

We stayed for a week at this hotel with Shearings. We were very glad we had paid extra for a room upgrade with a sea view. Our twin room was quite spacious with comfortable beds. The room faced the beach and the pier so we had good views. The bathroom was adequate with a shower over the bath though it was quite small. We were pleased to be on the second floor and able to use the stairs as the lifts are dreadful. The room was very clean and the Portugese lady who cleaned it daily was excellent. We appreciated the supply of clean towels every day and the supply of tea coffee and milk. Many hotels stint on these but this one is very generous.
The dining room was like a canteen and was very full with tables rather close together. It was also very warm and not a place to linger! The food served was good on the whole and our waitress was excellent
The hotel badly needs refurbishing but the staff are an asset.

Typical Shearings hotel, but the staffing levels in the restaurant were so poor that on some nights the service came to a standstill. On 1st September we entered the restaurant at 6.36 pm for our three course evening meal and didn't get our third course until 8.05 pm! Apparently some staff were off and Shearings didn't bring any staff in to cover these shortages. I felt sorry for the few staff that were on (mainly from the EU) who were driven to despair dashing about.

In addition they introduced something called 'Light Service' in the bedrooms on one day. This seemed to consist of folding (not replacing) towels and making the bed, nothing else.

The sound system was poor and unless you are sitting directly around the entertainment you couldn't hear too clearly what anyone was saying.

All seemed a bit penny pinching for a week that cost well over £1,000.

Shall not return.

Just returned from a 5 day holiday with Shearings to this hotel. We have visited quite a few Shearings hotels, we find the holidays good value for money, this hotel was probably not the best for us but it was good enough. We upgraded our room, have found that its the best thing to do. Our room was small but clean, well decorated, the furniture seemed new, the TV was fine and the cleaning staff did a very good job. We found the food to be good, we liked the buffet breakfast, much quicker if you are leaving early for a trip. On the whole the staff were efficient and friendly. Now for the negatives, the entertainment we thought was pretty poor, out of the four nights there was just one good act, the rest was a bit average, I am comparing this with about 6 other Shearings hotels we have visited, although the entertainments manager did seem to work hard it was not for us. The other negative was the first impression of the hotel, the outside needs sweeping regularly, it is littered with cigarette ends and looks dirty, can't a member of staff clean up and what about providing ash trays for smokers ? There are more positives than negatives for this hotel, we did enjoy our stay and the weather was beautiful.

We ahve just returned from an 8 day Shearings tour to Eastbourne staying at the Bay Burlington. From the moment we were greeted and welcomed by the manageress we knew that this was going to be a friendly hotel. The staff were helpful, courteous and friendly especially our chambermaid (did not catch her name) Joao who served my wine with such efficiency, Francesco always helpful and charming and the trainee Rubin polite, courteous and willing even if a little too pressured.
The entertainment was very good on the 2 nights we decided to watch. Mark the entertainments manager tried to please everyone with his humour and his selection of dance music - a charming man
Bar service was efficient and friendly with average price structure
Food was adequate. We never had a reason to complain and for what we paid, it was value for money. Breakfast was my favourite - buffet service with an excellent choice. Dinner was a 3 course waiter served meal. Portion size was a little small on some days. Nothing to complain about yet nothing to rave over
Hotel / room 214, was comfortable and spacious if a little tired in certain areas it was always kept clean with plenty of seating area. Our room had the most wonderful view of the sea, the pier and the carpet bedding. Only 2 small complaints about our room was it was too hot even with 2 windows left open and the floorboards creaked quite badly.
Would I be pleased to stay again - Yes I would. Remember that its not a five star hotel and they dont charge five star prices but in our opinion the have five star staff

Booked a long weekend at the Burlington and paid extra for a front room with a great view of the pier and beach. Not sure of the four poster, which was more of a hindrance than a useful addition. Lovely spacious room only spoiled by the rather drab lighting, which was also the only downside of a large well appointed bathroom. Food was fine, other than the battered fish which was well and truely battered to about about a quarter of an inch thickness.Speedy check in, and very good staff, so would return. Just felt sorry for the people below us, as the floor was seriously creaky.

We have just returned from another great holiday with shearings and the trips were excellent but unfortunately I cannot say the same for the hotel I am glad that we upgraded to a premier as it was vey nice clean and comfortable. We have stayed in lots of Shearings hotels over the years and yes some do look a bit tired but there is a difference between tired and dirty. The wallpaper in the dining room where we sat was peeling off and in the lounge area cobwebs were all over. The food was okay but it would have been once to have a jug of water on the table and not have to ask the waitress every time you wanted a drink.
I did not mind self service breakfast but I did not like mugs on the table and no tea pot.
The staff were very pleasant throughout the hotel and it is in the perfect location right on the sea front all it needs is a little updating and you would have a great hotel in a great location.

Arrived 22nd August to a lovely welcome from Christine. She came on the coach told us she wouldn't keep us long after a long journey. So she explained about keys, meals, etc.and let us get settled in.We had asked for a high floor quiet twin room.We were given the key for Room 435.
Its a standard twin room really big.Overlooking a fire escape but really really quiet.Bathroom also large with shower over the bath.It has, dressing table with one drawer large wardrobe to match with about 10 hangers and three drawers.Suitcase rack hairdryer and telephone on bedside table.Beds very comfortable with duvet and spare blanket in wardrobe.I emailed as I have done before to ask for the loan of an ironing board, and was really pleased to see it was there. It was the hottest week of the year and asked to have a fan as the room was really warm.It was there when we came back from evening entertainment.Mark Snow the entertainment manager was there as pleasant and funny as always..Bingo quiz then very good entertainment.Im not a fan of buffet meals.I prefer to be served at the table but everything was laid out nicely hot and plentiful for breakfast.Evening meal from 6.30 to 8 .We were served mainly by Maria and also on one occasion by Miriam both chatty and eager to please. My only gripe about the holiday was the heat in the restaurant A big big round of applause for all the staff they must have been so hot but all delivering great service as usual.
Still my favorite Shearings Hotel.A special thanks to Christine(I'm the lady who thought had lost her handbag). But hadn't.Senior moment!!Thank you for being so calm and kind.I filled in the comments card and it asks for the name of anyone we found to have given outstanding service.Well top marks to them all.
Cant wait for our next visit.

Well, where to start. On the minus side, the decor was jaded, also help button on first floor was missing. Also, if you dislike lifts and have to take the stairs, the carpet is loose and frayed in places. I would say it was dangerous for older people. My grandmother stayed in a, so called, disabled room. the shower step was too high for her, so she couldn't have a shower. Also, there was a step entering the room (not very good if you have a wheelchair.) There are pro's as well as cons though. The breakfast and evening meals were hot and were served promptly by willing waiters and waitresses. All in all, an average experience, but not an entirely bad one.

I visited the hotel for two nights with my parents who are both in their late 80s. My mother cannot walk very far and is mostly reliant on a wheelchair. I would like to thank the staff for their kindness. Csabos, our waiter, hit that delicate balance of professionalism and friendliness perfectly and the food was excellent. Ross at the bar, and indeed all the bar staff had the happy banter necessary to give value added to your stay. If there is anything I could say in terms of constructive criticism, it is to update the main central bulbs in the bedrooms to LEDs. Thanks you once again and we shall return.

Just stayed @ Burlington Hotel for four nights with Shearings and had a very good value for money break, we had a sea view room 411 which was clean and well presented, the lifts were in good working order to all floors although at peak times if your able you might use the stairs, the staff were all friendly and helpful, there was a little mix up in the dining room on the first night over our table number allocation but that was soon sorted, we cannot comment about the evening entertainment as we tended to go out for a walk after our evening meal and ended up finding a few local pubs, the breakfast were of the buffet type which were very good and the evening meals were off the menu with a choice of several different meals every night which were very tasty, all in all if you want The Dorchester quality then pay their prices if you want a budget break then for us The Burlington fitted the bill.

Hotel is right by the pier and you can sit by the windows in the coffee bar and lounge to watch the world go by. There are lifts but there are steps to get into the hotel itself. Hotel was clean, the interior of the two lifts I think were in the process of being updated. Décor in general was a bit tired. Travelled with Shearings on a 5 day holiday, the problem with all of Shearings Bay hotels is that every single menu is the same wherever you go. Buffet breakfast was good. Dinner menu not so good, I could not have the Cranberry gravy due to medication and a request for 'normal' gravy was apparently not possible so had to have my turkey dry. Meals are not served until 6:30.
Single bedroom 240 on second floor, view over the back, big chip in the sink, shower over the bath was a mixer tap arrangements and the warning on the wall 'very hot water' was not kidding it just got hotter and hotter even if you get the right temperature to begin with. Putting wet towels in the bath to be replaced did not work they were just folded and put back on the rail. Self closing mechanism on the inside of the room door was hanging off, good job I was not any taller or I could have lost an eye. Reception staff lovely but apparently did not know if any local trains were running down the coast due to the strike and actually said people had arrived in Eastbourne by train. On this advice I booked a taxi via the reception then looked on line and discovered the trains were not running so had to cancel taxi and change my plans. Sorry reception but I think you should have educated yourself under the circumstances before giving wrong advice.

This was our second shearings trip to Eastbourne and this hotel. We came last year and I wanted to spend my 40th birthday with you this year. Everything was excellent again. Nothing is too much for the staff. Food was delicious. I love the new buffet breakfast. The evening meals were all good with plenty of choice. Our waiter Daniel was very attentive and friendly. Thankyou for a wonderful holiday.

We have just returned from a long weekend at this hotel and we were on a Shearings coach break. The hotel was friendly and we had a nice big room though sadly not with a sea view which I should imagine would be wonderful given the close proximity to the sea. The food was good, particularly the breakfast which was buffet style. Maybe the lifts are dated and small but in such an old building I can see how this is unavoidable. The room was beautifully cleaned each day but as minor point..the maid knocking the door before 8 am was a pain....maybe a Do Not Disturb sign could be available in the rooms. All in all though we were very pleased with the hotel and had an enjoyable stay.

Large busy Victorian hotel used by Shearings for coach holidays. Nicely decorated, with co-ordinated curtains and bed spreads, We had some problems as there was no cold water in the shower so the next day we were moved to a lovely room with a sea view. We had to move after three nights as the room had been pre-booked so ended up in a room with a view of the car park and the fire escape - which was much quieter as the sea view rooms are on a busy road.. The staff were helpful and moved our luggage each time but it did seem as if we spent a lot of time packing and unpacking. The entertainment was aimed at the elderly clientele, and bingo seemed to be the high spot of the evening. There was plenty of choice of food which was always acceptable, and waiters tried hard to serve the large number of tables. They were always cheerful and pleasant. Water served at dinner was usually tepid, never cold.. Coffee and tea at breakfast was always pored into a mug at your table and I would have preferred it served in a pot. This was a very reasonably priced hotel, with pleasant helpful staff, who did their best in spite of problems.

We stayed at the Burlington last weekend and had enjoyable weekend. Very nice location, stayed at the Burlington 8 years ago but not such good experience. Only comment I would make is staff and food excellent but when are Shearings going to update and refurbish the hotel? The condition of it has been like this for many man years. Such a shame as they have certainly got it right with staff and food but condition of hotel is now quite embarrassing. The sister hotel (Majestic) in Eastbourne has scaffolding up as we speak so no doubt they are being upgraded.

I would like a comment please from Shearings re possible refurbishment programme.

We have just returned from a 5 day break at this hotel. It was our first coach trip holiday and a first to Eastbourne. Our booking was made based on hotel location, value for money and evening entertainment. All of these were great but the exceptionally friendly staff made this a very memorable holiday. Our waitress, Ivana was faultless, the bar staff were friendly and recognised customers very quickly, but for us the standout team member was Mark. His evening entertainment was hugely enjoyable and would be a factor in us making a future visit. Thankyou all.

Went with Shearings for a 5 day stay at the Burlington, our first ever visit to Eastbourne. Our room, 334, was a good size and very clean. The room did face an alleyway at the back of buildings, and my only gripe was that the seagulls started at the crack of dawn looking for food from the wheelie bins!!. (Having read previous reviews, all the guests would appear to have had a sea view, apart from us!). Good hot food and all the staff were very pleasant and helpful. Enjoyed the entertainment and Mark did a great job, we even had a couple of wins on the Bingo. Enjoyed Eastbourne very much and would definitely stay at the Burlington again.
