That National staple of our diet, the Great British Chip, is being celebrated in February and to celebrate it, why not have a visit to Curley's Dining Rooms

Forget ‘fries’ for a few days and enjoy genuine British Chips fresh from the range, good and hot chips, with a dash of malt vinegar to season, wonderful. We thought it would be a good idea to offer a few facts that you may not know about Chips.

  • Over 1.6 million tonnes of potatoes are made into chips every year in Great Britain. That is a lot of Chips.
  • Over 247 million servings of fish and chips are sold in the UK each year at fish and chip shops.
  • In one year we consume 3 billion meals with chips as a part of the meal.
  • For great Chips, that are perfect to eat, the best potatoes are King Edwards or Maris Piper.
  • Fish and chips are still more popular than Indian takeaways by 2 to 1.
  • Celebrity Chip fans include Rhianna, Kate Moss and David Walliams.
  • The average spend on fish and chips is only £3.22, less than half the price of a takeaway, and very good for you. Sustainably sourced Haddock and Cod are very good for you and extremely good for children.

Chips, then, are a grand Northern tradition, excellent value and thoroughly enjoyable. When combined with fish they become part of a meal rich in goodness and are pleasurable to eat.

Throughout the country some folks use curry sauce to add flavour to Chips, some like mayonnaise, but the vast majority of us still prefer salt and vinegar, a word of caution though go steady on the salt. Whilst, Chips are good to eat, fish even better, if you put a lot of salt on your Chips you will increase the risk of heart problems.

The joy of eating Chips is surely the taste, the texture, the fact that they are piping hot and they fill the spot better than quick snacks, so why spoil them with salt?
