1) What inspired you to start your own business and become a business owner

Since the age of 21 I've been in business, and literally months after finishing a 5 year company paid training program including 3 Yrs trade & 2 project management courses, my company went into liquidation and I found myself out of employment, it was the 80's and real life TV show 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet' was literally the way forward, Germany was booming, but I'd already missed two years due to the extra training courses, the money was fabulous too, and very tempting to go but no passport.

Then the business brain kicked in ( at 21 didn't know I had one ) realising that there was a shortage of builders, I had all the skills, I was multi-disciplined, 'Award Winning Apprentice Bricklayer & Builder' ( 3rd Nationally, 1st North West ) I put an advert in the Evening News and never looked back.

Working out of a van wasn't very glamorous in the winter months, and one day I had a knock on the van window, a neighbour asked me if I would fit a bathroom & kitchen in their home as they had seen my work, a pattern was building whereas we would build dormers & extensions and fit kitchens & bathrooms in them people loved the complete package, moreover the home improvements market was gaining momentum and that was my inspiration to buy a showroom, and offer the full service and I’ve never looked back. 


2) What do you love most about being your own boss

I've never really considered myself a boss, I’ve always been hands on, I always lead teams in my eyes, Bosses sat behind doors and were unapproachable in my employment days, my clients love the fact that I'm visible, I love being visible, I love being approachable & honest as I don't know any other way.

3) Who would you like to play you in a movie in real life?

That's an easy one, 'Russell Crowe'  Loved his acting in 'A Good Year'

4)What do you do to relax when you’re away from work?

I like to stay 50/50 half relaxed, half still in work mode, I love to research products from Italy, I go there twice a year to the trade shows, bit of a busman’s holiday, I love the whole Italian package, love my Lambrettas & Vespa's, Alfa Romeo's the whole design culture just captivates me.
