Keep your house secure this Winter!

The Security of one’s home is so important that it almost goes without saying.

All too often people and businesses only put protective measures in place after the event, thieves breaking into one’s family home and invading their private space is akin to a personal assault, not to mention the mess often left behind by such people.

It is opportune to take pro-active steps to prevent and deter the would be thief. With rare exceptions the majority of burglars are opportunists, because of some warped need for quick money they will seek out the easy opportunity.

The perpetrators will very often sell-on the stolen valuables for a small fraction of their value, this applies to expensive items left on view in homes and cars, it also applies to easy access being available with the least chance of being caught.

Simple precautions such as locking doors and windows, removing expensive items from view, not leaving boxes that once contained state-of-the-art electronics in the yard ready for disposal, all of these and more can make a big difference.

However, here is a better way, a way that does not sleep, and can summon assistance silently, so that people can leave their homes unattended, or sleep safely in their homes with total confidence. The installation of an alarm system can achieve this and make one’s insurance company smile at the same time, no small feat.

Intruder alarm systems are electronic sentinels that, if turned on, will give un-intrusive protection 24 hours per day 7 days a week, whether the family is home or away on holidays, or business. An effective alarm system can be installed so that it is connected to doors and windows around the perimeter of the building so that should anyone force open a window the contacts are broken and the alarm will activate.

The use of pressure pads may be included, should someone tread on the bottom stair the system will respond. In addition, or instead, space detectors can be used with the familiar PIR detector (Passive Infra-Red) that will be activated by anyone entering the space that it is protecting. Alarm systems can be stand-alone with a bell that will ring outside the building alerting neighbours, police etc. Or they can be routed to a control point that will alert a response team or police.

The overt signs of an alarm system, that is clearly still maintained and in use, will deter the ‘average’ opportunist thief. People who have a defunct alarm system would be wise to have it replaced with a new state-of-the-art system.

People who do not have an alarm system installed in their home should consider having one installed as soon as possible.
