It seems like only yesterday that the Summer holidays were coming to an end and everyone was due to head back to school. But, we're in October, and the first half-term of the new academic year is almost upon us. And that means the usual dread setting in about how to keep the children entertained. Well, look no further, because here is a guide to fun things to do this half-term.

For most schools, half-term this October is set to run from the 22nd to the 26th, and, judging by the weather outside the window and our experience of the Summer, things aren't looking too great in terms of outdoor fun. But that's not a problem, because there is plenty to be done in Bolton regardless.

The Albert Halls, Bolton, always has a great programme of shows on, and this time of year is no exception. One of the highlights during half-term is the showing of Disney Pixar's Brave, an animated adventure film, during the Family Film Club.

Sport is an important part of anyone's development, but with the weather as it is, it can be hard to take part in much. However, with the excellent facilities Bolton Arena have, there is always something to do, including tennis, badminton, squash, football, and much more. Be sure to enquire about their multi-sports camps.

Another holiday club that should eb of great interest is run by Bolton Lads & Girls Club, renowned for providing a great time and helping people in the process. When school closes, the fun begins, fun that includes sports, climbing, challenges and competitions. There may even be some kayaking and canoeing.

Of course, you could always pay a visit (or several) to Cineworld Bolton, previously voted the UK's Most Loved Cinema. They always have an amazing selection of films, from the latest blockbusters, to family-friendly entertainment. There are even special film clubs for children to enjoy something new.

Want somewhere to take your child that's inside, has a cafe for the adults, and allows the little one's to have big adventures? Fidgets Soft Play Centre is the place for you. It's an excellent play centre with climbing things and bouncy stuff and soft areas. Perfect.

Again, on the subject of sport, why not try something new in the form of boxing at Gloves Community Centre. Set up by Olympic medallist Amir Khan, it is a focal point for boxing and fitness in Bolton, offering outstanding facilities for people of all abilities.

Sure, it may be a little Winter-like outside, but that doesn't mean a trip to Holden's Ice Cream parlour in Edgworth is a bad idea. In fact, it is a very good idea when you consider the vast and unique range of flavours produced on site in the ice-cream mines deep below. Besides, everyone loves ice-cream, no matter what the weather.

How about getting the family together, dressing in your finest regalia, and heading down to Ruaux Photography, where they can provide you with an excellent photoshoot experience, using props and costume. And, after all the fun is said and done, you'll have some great photograpghs to remember the day.

The new school year coincided with the launch of Sandham's Dance Studio's new year of classes (of which you can read more about here). But there will be no half-term break over there, which means you have plenty of time to join in with the excellent classes taught by incredible teachers.

Another one for the little ones, and the adults that come along, Whales & Snails offer a terrific sensory experience for children and soft play areas where they can frolic as much as they want. And the adults can catch up with each other in the excellent cafe provided.

For those parents that just cannot take the time off, or are struggling for childcare options, we have a number of incredible nurseries available. Beechwood Private Nursery, set in excellent gardens in Bromley Cross, always come highly recommended. Or there is Seymour Road Nursery, based in Astley Bridge, which children love to go to.

All of these are local Bolton business, providing you with great things to do this half-term with your children. Many are running specialised days or evenings because of the holidays and with Halloween being so close, so why not pay a visit to their feature page, and see what's going on.

And have a great October half-term, from all of us at thebestof bolton.
