Interesting Facts About Bolton

Today my blog is about Bolton, interesting facts about our town, what makes it great and perhaps not so great at times. It would be great if you have any interesting facts to share, add them at the bottom of this blog.

I am a Bolton girl, born and bred but it often surprises me how little I know about my own town so here are a few did you know facts:-

 

  1. that with 260,000 people Bolton is the largest town in Britain
  2. Bolton has its very own wikipedia page 
  3. There are many thoughts around the name Bolton and how it came to be but the one that seems to have the main significance is that the name is derived from its situation 'bowl town'
  4. The first settlement in Bolton was thought to be Turton Heights just above Egerton
  5. Bolton boasts one of the oldest pubs in the country 'The Man and Scythe'
  6. The town was granted a Royal Charter to hold a market around Churchgate in 1251

Some facts about Bolton Wanderers, the one and only team! 
  1. Their nickname is the Trotters as their former ground was near a pig farm and the stray balls kept ending up in the pig pen!
  2. Bolton played at Pikes Lane 1880-1895 before moving to Burnden Park which was their home for over 100 years until they moved to the Reebok Stadium in 1997
  3. The club was formed in 1874 and was formerly named Christ Church but then changed their name to Bolton Wanderers and were the founder members of the football league
