Bolton College civil engineering students were granted exclusive access to the development and construction site of the brand new state-of-the-art educational centre -currently being built on the campus' doorstep.

The HND civil engineering students experienced a fully-supervised site visit of the new Bolton College science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) centre, which is due to be completed by spring 2014.

Students were accompanied by their course tutor, Lawrence Atherton, and Colin Michael, the site manager for contractor, Heron Brothers Ltd.

Lawrence Atherton, said: "The STEM project has provided our students with a first-class construction case study, which we can use to illustrate many of the subjects and topic areas we teach.

Helen Brown, Bolton College student, 19, said: "The visit was a fantastic chance for us all to see a live construction site first-hand, something which you can't really experience from a text book! We're all looking forward to witnessing the progress of the build."

"All of the students made the most of an exciting, relevant and very convenient opportunity to witness modern construction technology and methods in action. We are delighted to have been invited over for further visits, enabling us to observe the whole of the construction process from start to finish."
