In a world where social media is fast becoming a fundamental park of how we communicate in not only our personal lives but increasingly in business too, this invariably means it is becoming more and more under scrutiny and businesses need to exercise caution so as not to contravene any standards and guidelines set down under the Data Protection Act 1998.

In two recent cases highlighted by Fieldings Porter Solicitors, an NHS Trust was ordered to pay compensation to a patient after one of its employed unlawfully gained access to the man’s medical records. The man claimed the Data Protection Act had been breached and the trust was ordered to pay £12,500 for damages and £4,800 for loss of earnings.

The second case from Liverpool, a former employee was fined £500 and ordered to pay £1000 prosecution changes and a £15 victim surcharge for data breaches.
