We all love going to the Cinema and I was getting a little nostalgic recently when Cineworld in Bolton, which was recently crowned the most loved Cinema in the UK for the second year running, told me they were converting to a fully digital system.
I was thinking about the old town centre cinemas on Bradshawgate and up near the outdoor market. I used to frequent the one on Brashawgate often, although it was a real treat then and we would spend hours queuing outside and round the corner for all the latest releases.
Well this week, Cineworld in Bolton will say a big farewell to 35mm film and will embrace new fully digital projectors throughout the cinema.
The old projectors cost originally around £100,000 each and were installed 13 years ago and although the cinema has been showing digital for the last few years on 8 of its screens, they are now replacing the rest of their projectors.
Cineworld however will keep hold of two of its projectors so it can show old movies which have not been converted for the new system.
One flaw in the new system is that if one of the projectors break, it can take up to two hours to download a movie onto a new projector whereas the old system meant it took just a few minutes and projection staff now have a completely different role, moving from a very hands on, manual job to now more of a computer technician.
