On Friday 21st November, two Level 3 Hair & Media Make-up students from Bolton College were invited to practice their newly acquired skills on a group of fashion bloggers – including Sarah Ashcroft, aka. social media sensation ‘That Pommie Girl’ – at a studio in Salford.

The two learners volunteered to demonstrate their developing expertise after Get the Label/JD Sports approached the College and sought their assistance for the photo shoot of a calendar, which is being produced and sold in support of Key 103’s Cash for Kids Mission Christmas appeal.

Natalie Allison, Digital Marketing Executive at Get the Label/JD Sports, said: “We decided to go with Bolton College because it delivers highly regarded beauty courses within salons that offer professional treatments.

I had taken a look at a few other local colleges and Bolton seemed like the right choice. I think it’s great for students to get the opportunity to assist professionals in a fast-paced environment where they can build a network of contacts and get a real insight into the industry.”

One of the aims in Bolton College’s Vision is to encourage and help learners to experience the world of work. As such, the College continually maintains a proactive attitude with regards to seeking any opportunity in which to work with employers and secure industry experience for learners.

Sarah Ball, who is studying VRQ Level 3 Hair & Media Make-up, had the duty of assisting with the make-up on the day. When asked about taking part prior to the shoot, she said: “This is a good opportunity to practice all that I’ve learnt so far and gain some industry experience. I’m excited, but a bit nervous too!”

Natasha North, 27, is also studying VRQ Level 3 Hair & Media Make-up and had the task of doing the bloggers’ hair. Natasha said: “I love doing hair; it’s definitely my strength. I work in a salon and have done hairdressing for 10 years. I’m really excited about the shoot on Friday.”

Jenny Lee, VRQ Level 3 Hair & Media Make-up Co-ordinator at Bolton College, added: “It’s a fantastic opportunity, and I actively encouraged the students to get involved. I know both Sarah and Natasha will be competent at their respective jobs on the day. The more industry experience the students can get, the better.”

Sarah Ashcroft, who writes a fashion blog and has over 174,000 followers on Instagram, was one of the lucky bloggers to have her hair and make-up done on the day. Sarah commented: "It’s always fab to have a chance to shoot and catch up with some of my fellow bloggers – especially when it’s to raise money for such a good cause, like Cash for Kids. And this was even more fun, as shooting for a calendar is something totally new to me!"

If you would like to purchase the calendar, please visit www.getthelabel.com. It can be downloaded for £1.50 or the hard copy is available for £4.00.
