On Thursday 22nd May, Bolton Colleges' Hair & Beauty Department hosted the Greater Manchester Colleges’ Hair & Beauty Competition – an event that saw students competing from all 10 Greater Manchester FE colleges.

The event was organised by Hair and Beauty Lecturers, Managers and Curriculum Leaders from each college, who joined forces and developed the competition briefs using their industry expertise. The individual competitions, running simultaneously throughout the day, were for the areas of Beauty, Nails, Make-up, Hairdressing and Barbering.

The competing colleges were: Bolton College, Bury College, Hopwood Hall College, The Manchester College, Oldham College, Salford City College, Stockport College, Tameside College, Trafford College and Wigan & Leigh College.

Ineta Alisauskaite, who is currently studying Level 2 Beauty Therapy at Bolton College, competed in her category by performing a luxury facial. When asked how she felt about taking part in the event, Ineta said: “I’m very excited – the involvement alone will be great for my CV. I love Beauty Therapy and am progressing to Level 3 next year.”

This is not the first regional hairdressing event that the College has hosted this year; in April, the Wella Professionals XPOSURE 2014 Regional Heat took place in the College’s Wella Centre of Excellence. The GM Hair & Beauty Competition was similarly held in the industry-standard facilities of The Academy.

Not only was Bolton College proud to host the event, but staff were also delighted with their students’ successes: Emilija Simukauskaite (Hairdressing Level 1) and Reece Blake (Barbering Level 2) were both awarded 1st Place, Porscha Payne (Hairdressing Level 2) achieved 2nd Place. Adele O‘Keefe, Head of Creative Services, and both Sarah Bleackley, (Beauty Level 1)  took 3rd Curriculum Leader for Hairdressing, and Lisa Kniveton, Curriculum Leader for Beauty, shared their delight by commenting: “This has been an amazing event and a truly emotional moment for all of us.”

One of the guest judges at the event – Barbara Kerr, Style Director at Pierre Alexandre in Manchester – added: “I was honoured to be asked to judge the competition. I love all aspects of hairdressing, and it’s really exciting to see such talent in the next generation of hairdressers and beauty therapists.” It is hoped by all that this event will establish an annual trend for Hair & Beauty competitions involving Greater Manchester colleges.
