Because water is such a vital part of our daily lives and is a major utility it is right and appropriate that there should be Industry Standards to protect consumers.

So what is Water Safe?

WaterSafe is a free online search directory that is funded by the Water Industry in the United Kingdom enabling consumers to locate Qualified and Competent Plumbers that they can trust.

WaterSafe is a national accreditation body that checks and approves (or not) businesses and plumbing engineers to ensure that they are reputable people and good quality plumbers to build confidence in customers before they are invited into their homes. The scheme brings together thousands of qualified contractors across the Country drawing from all seven existing Contractors Schemes currently operating in the UK.

Approved Contractors’ Schemes across the UK, including:

  • The Water Industry Approved Plumbers’ Scheme (WIAPS),
  • Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (APHC),
  • Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE),
  • Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation (SNIPEF),
  • Anglian Water’s APLUS,
  • Severn Trent’s Watermark and
  • Thames Water’s TAPS.

WaterSafe aims to help consumers find the nearest qualified plumbing engineer local to you to help keep water supplies safe and healthy in homes and businesses. This is important because using an approved plumber/plumbing business helps prevent the risk of drinking water being contaminated by poor plumbing practices or sub-standard products.

The WaterSafe programme is supported by the Government watchdogs for drinking water, the Drinking Water Inspectorate in England and Wales, the Drinking Water Inspectorate (Northern Ireland), and the Drinking Water Quality Regulator in Scotland. Further, NHS guidance advises all hospital trusts to only use approved WaterSafe approved plumbers in their premises, in order to safeguard public health.

Plumbers approved through WaterSafe have specific training in the Water Fittings Regulations and Byelaws, to ensure they meet the strict legal requirements for installing water pipes and fittings.

WaterSafe approved businesses must adhere to the WaterSafe customer commitments, conditions of membership, scheme rules and customer redress arrangements. Where businesses fail to meet these standards, a disciplinary process applies. All members of WaterSafe carry agreed levels of public liability insurance and operate a customer redress scheme.
