World Sight Day is taking place on Thursday 8th October 2015, here are 7 great tips from Justin Kellett Opticians to help make sure you keep your eyes healthy.

Our eyes are two of our most precious possessions yet, all too easily, we can fail to take good care of our eyesight taking it for granted. Protect your peepers with these low effort actions.

1) Eat fish twice a week

Fish are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, proven to reduce the risk of dry-eye syndrome. If you can't stand fish, try fish-oil supplements.

2) Always use protection

Put on sunglasses whenever you leave the house. Not only will they block out the harsh glare of the sun, protecting your eyes from cataracts but they'll also protect your eyes from the drying effects of the wind.

3) Go for orange

Have sweet potatoes for dinner tonight. Rich in Vitamin A, these spuds are especially good at improving your night vision.

4) Take a break, your opticians say so!

When you're working on a VDU all day, set your alarm to beep every 30 minutes. Use this as a reminder to look up and away to some distant point for 30 seconds. This helps prevent eye fatigue and eyestrain

5) Have some spinach or broccoli twice a week

It could be steamed, sauteed in some olive oil with garlic or perhaps in a quiche. It doesn't matter how you get it, just make sure to eat some regularly. Studies have shown that Lutein, a nutrient abundant in spinach and dark green vegetables, may prevent age-related macular degeneration

6) Choose red onions

Cook with red onions, not yellow. Red onions contain more quercetin, an antioxidant that is thought to protect against cataracts

7) Regular sight tests

Regular eye tests are imperative because your eyes don't usually hurt when something is wrong. A sight test is a vital health check for your eyes that can pick up early signs of eye conditions before you're aware of any symptoms - many of which can be treated if found early enough. After all, you wouldn't neglect your routine dentist appointment just because you didn't have tooth ache.
