Its been much documented that in recent years, the radio studios in North Devon were closed down and the area was left without a truly local station.
In June 2010 a campaign was started to get local radio back on the airwaves and into homes and businesses in our part of the county.
By November 2010 studio equipment had been bought and the first 28 day Restricted Service Licence (RSL) broadcasts started. A series of short term broadcasts followed in Barnstaple and Bideford up to March 2012.
Whilst these were great, the short term nature of the licence wasn't good for continuity of listenership, nor was it possible to bring in advertisers for the longer term.
So by April 2012 a detrmined band of volunteers launched The Voice as a Digital Radio station broadcast on DAB (Digital) Radio around Devon (except Plymouth). And they applied for and were awarded a community radio licence to broadcast on FM around Bideford, Barnstaple and Ilfracombe.
Which is all great and brings us up to date with the latest situation...........so whats stopping the broadcasting?
As you would expect. its money! Over £20,000 is needed to build the transmitter station in 2 locations. And you may not know that the station is still staffed by volunteer DJs and broadcasters who take no payment for the time they give to keeping The Voice on air, covering outside broadcast events and updating on all the traffic incidents, weather, local events and news that makes the station so special.
Hopefully you now know to tune in online at http://www.thevoicefm.co.uk/radioplayer or you can re-tune your DAB digital radio to pick up The Voice.
But if this article has touched a nerve for, if you think you could play a part, big or small in helping to create a special radio station in North Devon, we'd love to hear from you. Mike Gorton is marshalling the troops and would love to hear for you, call him if you can help
