Bolton residents are being urged to get on their bikes and meet their Olympic hero as Sky Ride returns to Bolton.

Jason Kenny, triple Olympic 2012 gold medallist, will be joining thousands of cyclists as they take to Bolton’s streets for Sky Ride on Sunday 1 June.

The free cycling event will take place in his home town of Bolton for the third time, offering everyone another chance to ride through the town on traffic-free streets, taking in some of the town’s key landmarks.

In addition to the 5km circular route there is also a shorter 3km route for riders who want to do a shorter distance and for those with disabilities, offering everyone the chance to take part.

The route will be open from 11am to 3pm, allowing participants to take part in the ride at their own pace. With no official start point or start time, cyclists can ride as much or as little of the route as they want.

Free bike hire is available from the former Millet’s store adjacent to the Bolton News in Victoria Square including adapted cycles provided by the Wheels for All* team.

All riders can stop off at the Activity Areas in Victoria Square and Queens Park to meet up with family and friends and enjoy the free entertainment and try out some of the many activities on offer.

Jason will officially open the route on Le Mans Crescent at 11am and throughout the day he will visit the different Activity Areas to meet people and cheer the riders on their way.  In addition to watching the entertainment, sport and games in Queen’s Park he will also be taking part in a question and answer session and sign cyclists’ Sky Ride bibs in Victoria Square and will also visit the new Tricks & Tunes area at Chorley Street car park with amazing extreme cycling shows, stunt demos and music from the resident DJ.

Jason Kenny said: “The atmosphere at Sky Ride is like a festival. It’s a great celebration and there will be loads going on. It’s an amazing opportunity to ride on closed roads and to see your town from two wheels, totally traffic-free.”

Deputy Mayor of Bolton, Councillor Colin Shaw said: “We want to encourage everyone to have a go at cycling as it is a great way to keep fit and have fun whatever their age or ability. Thousands of people turned out to last year’s event and I hope many more will join in the fun filled day this time whether to cycle the route or just to cheer everyone along the way.”
