The Hindu Festival of Diwali is fast approaching and there are events happening all over Bolton celebrating this special occasion.

The Bolton Hindu Forum is holding a dussehra festival and Diwali fair on Saturday 4th October. It’s free to attend at the event between 4pm and 8pm at the Bolton Indian Sports Club.

Some of the exciting events on offer at the fair include live music, street performances, Indian food stalls and so much more. The highlight of the evening will be the stunning firework display.

There will be a small £2 charge for car parking. Many of our best of Bolton members are sponsors at this event too, including Bolton Lads and Girls Club, Bolton at Home, Bolton College and Bolton FM.

Bolton Library are celebrating Diwali too with a special arts and crafts event. On Saturday 18th October between 12pm and 3pm there will be a free colourful textiles event, supported by Bolton Hindu Forum.

Diwali is on the 23rd October this year and is the most famous of Hindu festivals. It is often known as the festival of lights because of the hundreds of small lights that are placed in homes, buildings, shops and other public places. These oil lamps are called diyas.

Diwali is however a 5 day festival and honours the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. The new business year starts at Diwali and it is also a time for giving and receiving presents, spring cleaning, wearing new clothes and holding large firework displays. The exact origins of Diwali depending on which areas of India and Nepal you ask.
