How did you get into the jewellery business?

I’m the fourth generation of jewellers in my family. My great grandfather opened Zelley’s jewellers in 1910 in Bishop’s Stortford. The jewellery business is in my blood. I’ve gained 17 years’ experience working in the business, specialising in engagement rings. Over the last decade and a half, I’ve built up great contacts in the diamond and gem industry that have enabled me to create some great unique pieces.

What do you love about the business?

I love helping customers. They are genuinely happy when they leave the shop with a specially chosen present, or an engagement ring. It’s always a happy occasion.

I also love sitting down with customers and helping them create a piece that’s unique to them. It’s one of my favourite things when someone comes in with a unusual request. I love sourcing the diamonds and gems to create something truly unique. It’s wonderful being part of that creative process.

What makes you proud about being the owner of Stag & Doe?

We are far more flexible than most jewellers & we do whatever we can to get the job done for a customer; to make sure their dreams are fulfilled. We really get to know our clients and what they want.

I also have a young family, so we designed Stag & Doe to be accessible for those with push chairs. We know from experience how difficult it can be navigating small shops with small children. We want the shop to be friendly and approachable. We have a cupboard of toys to amuse the little ones and an area to feed your baby, if they get hungry.

What do you love about Sudbury?

I’m originally from a market town and I love the community feel small towns like Sudbury have. The devastating fire in Friars Street has shown how businesses and the public rally together to help each other. That’s what makes Sudbury so special and one of the things I love about it. Sudbury has some great independent shops and we’re proud to be one of them.
