Glaucoma Awareness in Sudbury

... Comments

Wardale Williams hosted a pressure checking afternoon in the foyer of Barclays Bank, Sudbury, in conjunction with the British Lions.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the western world.  If caught early enough its effects can be minimised with the regular use of prescribed eye drops or laser treatment.

A regular eye examination will ensure that any signs associated with glaucoma are detected and appropriate action taken.  One indicator of this condition is increased pressure within the eye, which can be measured using a simple painless 'puff of air' test.  The pressure inside the eyes is not related to blood pressure, so it should not be assumed that just because blood pressure is normal, intra-ocular pressures will be normal too.  The increased pressure can damage the retina, the light sensitive tissue inside the eye, causing a gradual loss of vision and eventual blindness.  The condition is rarely painful, therefore the only real way of checking is to have a regular comprehensive eye examination by a qualified optometrist.

Wardale Williams would like to thank The Lions Club,in Ipswich, for supporting this event. You can click on their website to see some of the work they do.
