Here at thebestofSudbury, I am passionate about our local shopkeepers, trades people and business community, and I want everybody in our area to know just how good they are. So to tie in with the national Buy Local campaign, I have promised to put my money where my mouth is, and I will only buy from local independent shops for the whole of the month of May. There will be no popping to the supermarket or shopping online! Every item that I buy will be sourced from an independent shop or business local to my home.
The town centre is the beating heart of any community, but we live in challenging times. High Street business people have been hit hard by the recession, as well as the continued growth of large, out-of-town retail parks, and of course online shopping. But your High Street and local businesses are crucial resource for the community. Not only do they help to create the unique and individual towns and villages we all love, local authority research also shows that for every £1 we each spend with smaller local businesses, 63p stays in our local economies. Compare this with just 40p that goes back if we all choose to shop at larger business.
