As I write this, the wind is howling, rain pounding on the windows and I swear it’s not actually been light today, just a sort of grey dusk.

But, as I'm forever a positive person,  I’ve done some research and put together 15 things you can do to help banish the winter blues, put a smile on your face and it won't cost you a fortune.

Pour yourself a large glass of Baileys and stick on a rubbish Christmas film. You know the sort- Ambitious but lonely woman, who falls in love with a mysterious stranger, who’s just moved to a random small American town,  fall in love and we all learn about the spirit of Christmas. It’s so bad it’s good. If you want some inspiration, I can recommend this

Put on your wellies and waterproof coat, get yourself to the Sudbury Stour Valley Path and enjoy nature. Stick on a podcast or audio book. My favourites have been Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman and Cabin Pressure

Dig out your favourite recipe from your childhood, head to Sudbury town or Farmers Market and get creative. What’s not to like about Chocolate pavement and pink custard. Find the recipe here

Learn to knit/ crochet/ embroidery and if you can already do one of those things, get yourself to The Woolpatch and stock up on lots of lovely yarn. Good for your soul and you get to keep warm.

Spend Saturday mooching around Sudbury. Pop into one of the towns many independents and have a chat with whoever works there. Embrace your local community.. quite literally.

Feel like a kid again and pop into Ray’s Retro. Remember the joy those childhood toys used to give you, whether it was Star Wars merch or a Sindy. sigh

Take a look at what’s happening at The Quay Theatre and book yourself tickets for some fun. It could be this years panto or some live-streaming action happening in 2023 - but it’s something to look forward to!

Do a good deed and expect nothing in return because nothing makes one soul sing more than helping others. There are plenty of volunteering opportunities for you to help out in your local community. You won’t regret it.

Sing. Loudly. Possibly Christmas Carols. Why not? It’s nearly Christmas and singing is good for your mental health and many other things. To quote the Christmas Guru, Buddy The Elf, "the best way to spread Christmas cheer is to sing loud for all to hear".

Do something that is so far out of your comfortzone that the sense of accomplishment will make you feel glorious: why not come along to Sudbury Speakers Club. An amazingly friendly club who’s soul purpose is to help improve your speaking skills in a non-judgemental way! Find out more here.

Nothing makes me smile more than writing my name on a banana with a biro. Order your yellow happiness at Coxes Boxes.

Become a time traveller with this cool website. Upload a photo and their magic AI pixies will recreate the look of years gone by. Here I am in the 1950s and civil war America.

Binge a Netflix Boxset.. The Crown, Locke and Key, Stranger Things.. there’s a load of programmes I give you permission to watch back to back under a duvet eating all the purple sweets out of the quality street tin!

Turn off I’m a celebrity get me out of here. I can’t see how watching Boy George and Matt Hancock eating various kangaroo parts is good for your well-being!

Write a letter to an old friend or relative. Imagine their happy face when they get something in their letter box that isn’t a bill or marketing leaflet.
