1 Oak Home Care Raising Money for Frontline NHS Staff at West Suffolk Hospital

Acton based home care business, 1 Oak Home Care, have created an ingenious way to help frontline NHS staff.

Angel Clark, founder and Director of of the Home Care firm near Sudbury, was receiving complaints from some of her care team, who said the PPE masks they all wear when visiting clients, were starting to cause discomfort around the ears, especially when worn for any length of time. The creative thinking MD started researching potential solutions to the problem when stumbled upon a photo online that could help alleviate some of the discomfort PPE mask wears experienced.

A headband with strategically placed buttons allows the facemask to stay secure round the mouth area without irritating the ears.

After posting a photo of her wearing her own homemade PPE headband, she was inundated with messages from those working or those that had friends working in hospitals, asking how they could get hold of the headbands for themselves

Although initially, Angel made the bands for her team of carers, she said “the NHS are doing an amazing job during this COVID-19 crisis, with doctors and nurses risking their lives every day. We wanted to help and give back. The last thing the medical team need is pain in the ears when fighting Covid-19”

On Sunday 5th April, a Justgiving page was set up to help raise money to buy the supplies to make the headbands. Angel goes onto say, “Because it only costs £2 to make per headband, it’s a really affordable way we can make a difference to the current situation”

By the end of the day £450 had been raised. Currently it stands at over £760, with supplies ordered to make 480 headbands.

The priority recipients will initially be frontline workers in the ICU & Maternity wards in West Suffolk Hospital and Colchester General, but the justgiving page will remain open whilst there is still demand.

Mrs Clark comments, “I want to continue to expand these to the NHS staff at local hospitals and even further afield if there is the demand. We’ll be grateful to any donation, large or small that can help with our mission”
