From today learner drivers will be allowed on motorways under certain conditions. Rule changes to the highway code allow an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car and displaying 'L' plates to accompany learner drivers on motorways. Most instructors that I have talked to have said it's about time as learners should be equipped with the skills before taking their test.
As the DVSA have not published this widely I shall wait a while before taking a pupil on a motorway as it may surprise other drivers who may not be aware of this rule change and I think there is a risk of being harassed until it becomes public knowledge. Also the new rule maybe abused by people who may (eg mum, dad, or friend) think it is okay for them to take a learner in a motorway as they can on other roads.
It is not compulsory that learners have motorway experience so they should not be taken on motorways unless they are ready and that they want to to do it.
