Exfoliation

Your skin sheds up to 40,000 dead skin cells every minute naturally, however many need extra help from exfoliation for a smooth, bright skin.

As we age, cell turnover slows, so exfoliating your skin prevents dry, flaky skin, helps even skin tone, helps to prevent pore clogging, improves the texture of your skin and helps your moisturiser penetrate deeper into your skin.

Exfoliation is different for face and body, you can use much stronger exfoliants on your body, and there are different ways to exfoliate.

Natural bristle brushes are available for both face and body, and should be used on a dry skin in a circular motion.

Loofahs and exfoliating gloves are used only on the body and can be used dry or wet.

Exfoliating scrubs contain plastic beads, sugar, salt, peach, almond or apricot kernels or other natural buffing substances such as pumice. Can use facial or body ones, and unusually in this case, man made plastic beads are better than natural kernels or stone as they have uneven surface areas which can cause microscopic scratches to the surface of your skin which can lead to sensitivity.

All the above methods are described as mechanical exfoliation as they rely on you to thoroughly remove the dead cells by using massage to slough off dead cells.

Chemical peels contain enzymes or fruit acid usually used only on the face. These peels loosen the glue that hold skin cells together, then the enzymes or fruit acids munch up the released dead skin cells.

Depending on your skins sensitivity and skin type you should look to exfoliate every 3 to 7 days. Over exfoliation can be very detrimental causing inflammation of the skin, sensitivity or redness.

Exfoliating your body can help if you suffer with in-growing hairs, particularly on legs, bikini line and underarms, and will help achieve a more even tan when used before applying self tan.
