Visiting from the USA we checked into the Burlington on 22-9-14 and were warmly greeted by the front desk. Our room was #202, I think, a little tired, but comfortable and nice size. We went down for breakfast and at the entrance to the dining room looked and waited for the Maitre De as the front desk told us to check in with him upon gong for breakfast. He was not there, we waited for over five full minutes, no Maitre De. Everyone was walking past us and going in and setting down. So we went in and took a table for two. A waiter came up and took our drink and toast order and told us to go ahead to the breakfast bar. The waiter brought our tea and toast and took our breakfast order, which was promptly brought. My wife had to go to the restroom and left. Then the Maitre De came up and asked me why i was setting there. I told him no one was seated there so we set down. He then RAISED HIS VOICE and said I was to check in with him at the entrance. I explained we had tried to, but he was not there or nowhere to be seen. Still talking in a raised voice he said I should of waited for him, I explained we waited over five minutes. He persisted in telling me I should of waited for him. Now I'm getting embarassed as the people around us are taking notice. I told him again that he was absent from the entrance for a longer perior of time than my wife and i cared to stand there and wait, not knowing IF fhe would ever show up. At this point i stood up and asked him to go get the manager and he left and didn't return. My wife had returned at this point. I didn't get his name, but he was a large black man. After he left the table next to us said they couldn't believe his actiions and him doing what he had done in the tone of voice he used. After breakfast we checked out and moved to another hotel up the street. We spent three days in Eastbourne visiting sites and friends. Luckily for us we had only booked one night at the Burlington, not knowing what kind of a hotel it was. The checkout process went very smoothly. The staff other than the Maitre De were very plesant and helpful, the location is great. But, we wont be back. We would of given the hotel a higher rating than averave if it wasn't for our experience with the Maitre De. We have traveled all over the US and many foreign countires and have never been treated by a hotel staff member as this perosn. We had just spent 15 days touring London, Edinbugh and and renting a car and driving all over England. This being near the end of our trip left a sour taste in our mouth for England. No WiFi in room was a big disappointment as I had to go down to the lobby for laptop use. Tom USA

just returned from a week,s holiday in the Burlington.
food was very good plenty of choice and excellent service from friendly staff.
our room (207) was clean but the bathroom was small and cramped. the heated towel rail was very hot and we were unable to turn it of so the room was always hot and stuffy.
reported it to reception (several times) but nothing done.if we had the window open all night the traffic kept us awake. the dining room was also very hot and stuffy no air-con.
nice place but not our best holiday with shearings considering all the extras we paid.
shame as our last break at harrowgate was lovely.
at least the weather was good in Eastbourne last week.

What a tired looking little room. Passing other rooms where cleaners were , it seemed some of the bigger rooms had been given a facelift ! (250 and 235 needed looking at too. )Food and staff really good .

I spent a week at the Burlington recently. The accommodation was good and clean and the food tasty and varied. The staff were friendly and helpful to such an extent that one of the waiters, Bruno Pestena ran to my assistance at breakfast time when i was choking on a misdirected piece of food. His timely help saved me from severe discomfort and possibly worse. He then carried on serving guests as if nothing had happened. I barely got a chance to thank him. With this calibre of staff I strongly recommend the Burlington.

Just returned from seven nights at the Bay Burlington Hotel Eastbourne and as usual excellent staff made the holiday special. The hotel itself is old but fairly well maintained and the rooms are clean, comfortable and spacious. The entertainment manager, Mark, is quite a joy and it is impossible not to be inspired by his sense of fun and boyish laugh whilst endeavouring to keep all the guests entertained. Meal times are slightly more flexible than previously and service one of the best of all the Shearings hotels we have visited, (thanks especially to George our waiter at table 52). The food was of varying quality but being vegetarian obviously my choices are very limited, however portions were generous and food was hot. I would definitely recommend a stay to anyone, and would generally recommend a sea view. However after anticipating the view and paying our £7. per person per night extra we were quite disappointed to discover that a small section of the hotel frontage was being renovated in sequence. Unfortunately on our first full day the scaffolding started going up at our section and by the second day it was outside our window on the third floor - and so were the workmen. Consequently we had to have our curtains drawn for privacy. I will say that Shearings refunded the sea view supplement without quibble, but it would have been nice to have been warned the sea view might not be available, when we booked.

We spent four days at the Burlington in May and were very happy with the hotel. We had been some years ago whilst they were refurbishing the hotel and had a terrible experience in a room which should never have been let. This time however the hotel was very comfortable and we had been given an upgrade to a room with a sea view. The staff were almost all non UK and our waiter had great difficulty in understanding our Welsh accents. However, the overall impression of the hotel was very good and the weather was fine.
We have been to both Shearings hotels in the town but this was by far the most positive experience. Whilst it has nothing to do with the hotel we were disappointed with the cleanliness of the town and missed the wish tower restaurant feeling that the new development on the site was poor.

We had an eventful trip due to our car cam belt breaking on the A27 at Havant, and had to decide weather to go back home by train, or carry on to Eastbourne. So glad we decided to carry on. The Burlington is a lovely grand old hotel, with super staff, superb breakfast, and evening meal, many thanks to our waiter at table 89 [ Sorry i can't remember his name ] who catered my wife's special needs. We had room 412, which was clean, tidy, and beds made every day. I complimented the staff at reception about this room, and was surprised to learn that it had not yet been updated like some of the other rooms, some people must just love to complain. If i had to find a complaint i would be hard pressed, but it would be nice to have had a live band on one of the evenings of our three night stay, but all in all a very enjoyable stay, with plenty to do and see. Thanks to all staff, and hope to be back soon.

We stayed on a 5 day shearings holiday at this hotel commencing Monday 18 th august. After a 7 hour coach journey we were told upon arrival that there was no hot water in our room and that there was a problem with the boiler. No alternative accommodation was offered but told that the engineer would be coming the day after.we finally had hot water on the Thursday evening before our departure on the Friday morning. We did use one of the rooms allocated to guests to have a hot shower during our stay so the hotel did offer its best alternative. Our room like so many of your other reviews was clean but in need of tlc and updating. The staff were generally helpful and the food was good.our stay was spoiled by the lack of hot water on demand and the length of time it took for a repair

Just back from a three-day break. The hotel has a lovely position on the sea front just by the pier. The staff are all very polite and welcoming. The hotel is a little tired in places but is a beautiful building. The dining room and entertainment areas are very impressive. The food was very good with choices for all three courses including coffee. Very attentive waiting staff. The entertainment was provided the three nights with were there and it catered for the varied age range of the guests. We had a room to the back of the hotel, which was Very clean although the bathroom could do with a makeover, but this didn't spoil our stay.

We stayed here for two nights with family as part of a 60th birthday celebration. In many ways the hotel is fine, but you really have to know what you're getting before you arrive if you don't want a bit of a shock.

The hotel caters for a mostly retired clientèle, many of whom have obviously been coming here for years. As such, I don't think anything has really changed in the hotel since about the 1980s, and it's like a little time warp. The bar and lounge are really nice, but everywhere else looks very tired and badly in need of redecoration, particularly the bedrooms. Our bathroom had corrosion inside the mirror and discoloured lino on the floor, and the whole room generally was a bit shabby in terms of decor. That said, it was kept very clean, so it was fine - but don't expect a luxury stay or anything.

The hot water was a bit of a problem, as the shower could either be scalding or slightly cold, and it was impossible to find a comfortable temperature in between.

The staff were nice, but at times a bit overrun and they completely messed up our lunch order one day. Generally the food was fairly good, if on the inoffensive and easy-to-chew side.

The best thing about the hotel really is the location, as you get lovely sea views at the front and it is right by the pier. We were staying during the Eastbourne Airshow, and when the weather wasn't so good you could easily watch everything either from your bedroom window or from inside the lounge.

I would consider staying here again if I were travelling with elderly relatives, but if you're a younger couple you might want to look for something a bit more modern.

Just got back from an 8 day Shearings holiday in Eastbourne and I would just like to give a great big thank you to the Bay Burlington and all it's staff for making our holiday what it was, an excellent holiday and a really good break. They coped admirably under the most trying of circumstances from Tuesday to Thursday when one of the hot water boilers went down meaning parts of the hotel had no hot water, we were in one of the affected rooms ( 232 ) but were kept informed of the situation all the way through by Chris and her team of wonderful receptionists, and indeed issued with 4 free drinks vouchers each for the whole time the hot water was down and told Shearings would be in touch when we arrived home, Chris has got to be the most hands on manager I have ever met always available if needed, thanks once again receptionists. Special mention though for porter Nigel who distributed and collected our luggage brilliantly sorry I missed you mate to personally thank you.
The Burlington has an excellent kitchen team, the food they produce is I think superb great variety everyday on the menu and if you like big breakfasts the Burlington big breakfast is well worth the £1-20 supplement. Moses the dining room manager is again very hands on always on the go, which brings me to one of the stars of the week for us Daniel our waiter, could do the job eyes closed I should think very well mannered and courteous at all times and as I say so efficient at the job thanks Daniel.
Due to it being the Eastbourne airshow the weekend we arrived it hadn't been possible to upgrade rooms so we where at the back of the hotel but nonetheless Tania kept the room spotless and clean towels were supplied every day. Our room wasn't one of the refurbished ones but it was clean and that's the main thing for us, one teeny criticsm of the room is that all the lights use energy saving bulbs and by the time they're bright you're switching them out, sorry but I had to get a moan in somewhere.
The entertainment at night, was enjoyable every night Mark Snow is full of personality and does his utmost to make sure people enjoy themselves, Ray Campbell was great on the night he was on as was Bobbie Bennett (junior showtime for those old enough to remember) yes we thought that to ......junior showtime blimey he's come down, but believe me he's still funny, and can still sing even if the sound person mixed up his music. Mark might even have converted me to BINGO I don't think. Again thanks go to Mark and all the entertainers who worked so hard.
The one group of people who worked their socks off every night were Shaun and his bar staff, including Jokia, Tanaka, Carla and Eileen who I'm sure WON'T be a trainee for much longer, well done and thanks guys you are all stars.
So yes we enjoyed our first experience of Eastbourne, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Bay Burlington and without a doubt we will be returning.......THANKS TO YOU ALL.
Finally though it would be remiss of me not to give a mention to our absolutely marvellous and wonderful coach driver ' Two Teds Tony ' any Shearings travellers on the Eastbourne run if you get Tony as your driver you're in for a treat.

Just had four days at The Burlington. We had paid for a sea view but were upgraded to a premier room which was lovely. It was large with a four poster bed, settee, armchair and large TV. The bathroom was excellent with bath and separate shower cubicle. The room was cleaned every day and towels changed if necessary. All the staff were extremely good, special mention to Mark on the entertainment who was excellent, as were the acts we saw. We found the food to be good with good choice for each course. A big thank you to Bruno our waiter who looked after us very well. We loved Eastbourne and the surrounding area and would certainly return to the Burlington.

A little outdated but that seems to add to its charm, just had a week here and would definately use this hotel again,I think I would travel by car next time though, shearings coaches and staff are very good but eight hours travelling was to much for us,having said that the hotel staff were excellent as was the food, the tv in our room was old but you don't go on holiday to watch tv, would go for room upgrade if we go again, all in all a very nice holiday.

After reading many reviews, we really didn`t know what to expect. We were however pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It is of course an older style seaside hotel with some creaking floorboards along the corridors etc. but please don`t let that deter you. Most of the rooms seem to have been re-furbished to a good standard and our bedroom on the 4th floor was bright and pleasant. The bathroom was very large and this had also been updated. The lounge and dining room again had been re-decorated and had a nice atmosphere. The food to us was excellent value and how anyone can write a negative review of the food is beyond me. There were 4 starters and usually 6 main courses followed by about 4 desserts. These were always presented well and there was always more than enough. The hotel itself is in an enviable position opposite the promenade and 5 minutes walk to the main shopping centre.
This was our first visit to Eastbourne for many years and we found the town a cross between Bournemouth and Brighton with so much to do and see. We will definitely be returning in the very near future and will stay at The Bay Burlington. Well done!

Myself and my wife spent a week at the Burlington Hotel in May .Position close to pier, hope they are able fix recent fire on pier before May next year, hope to be there again. Put the arsonist in jail. Position great, food excellent, value for money £303.00 per week, beat that. We did not make use of entertainment but people who did spoke highly of it.

My friends and I had another weekend here and it has really improved on each visit, this was about our 7th or 8th to this hotel.
The refurbishments are really working, and we have seen lots of improvements over the 5 years we have been going here, we have taken family and friends there and always had a great time.
The entertainment is always good and the Host , Mark is brilliant and a real asset to Shearings,
All the bay hotels should have a Mark !
Food is excellent and with a great location, very easy to get to lots of other resorts, and shops on the doorsteps too, we will definitely be back.

We had a nice room a little smaller than our previous room at Exmouth but never the less good sea view and close to Eastbourne pier,we were not particularly enambered with the evening meals bar one on the last evening, which was very nice.however the breakfasts were excellent apart from the waiter service which was a little slow,we had to wait nearly twenty minutes before being served for breakfast,a very good selection of breakfast cereals and fruit which we enjoyed a lot.Car parking at the rear of the hotel left a lot to be desired the surface was very poor especially being charged £5 a day for the use of it.Generally speaking it was a very enjoyable weekend.

We stayed from Monday 28th July, due to leave 1st August. We found the management and staff extremely helpful, both at reception and in the bar and dining-room. Unfortunately our stay co-incided with the dreadful fire on the Pier, and as we had a sea view room, we saw the whole thing unfold. The manager even laid on refreshments for the fire-fighters and police who were outside , some of them all night. As we decided to leave early because of the amount of traffic, the manager even made us up a packed lunch for our journey home. So thoroughly recommend this hotel, and would go again.

My parents (in their 60s) stayed here last week, and really enjoyed it. I spent two evenings there at the cabaret, and thoroughly enjoyed it. All the oldies were well entertained - the compere (Mark Snow) was very charismatic and had real charm - full marks to him! By all reports, the cabaret on Saturday was very good too.
I mark this place down a bit for health and safety reasons. On the Friday night the ballroom was sweltering hot, and one of the elderly customers unfortunately vomited at his table due to the heat. I informed the manager of this, and was told that 'somebody was coming'. I assumed this meant a first aider, but no-one was quick onto the scene, so I dealt with it myself (only getting the man some water and helping him outside for fresh air). A staff member did assist eventually. The staff should have been more proactive in dealing with this - HOWEVER things like this do happen sometimes, and its not a big deal.
My parents rate it 4 stars, and they were the real customers. My rating is only skewed as the vomiting customer put me off my Guinness a bit...

Visited Eastbourne and done a blind booking through laterooms for this hotel, I knew it was going to be disappointing as there was no images of the rooms with laterooms but so as not to spoil the occasion I went along with it and it is facing the seafront so it was not all bad.

The rooms though are really dated and they only have 5 tv channels most of which emit a fuzzy picture, the showers are also dated the rooms are just a bit naff to be honest.

The lifts will give you the biggest indication of how dated this place is, carpeted lifts and the lifts themselves are tiny cramped affairs.

Always looking to end on a good note, the breakfast was extremely good what they lack in tasteful decor they make up for with tasty food. the hash browns with a hint of onion were the highlight so if you want a good breakfast head to this place.

Chose this hotel as it was one of the few we could find with nightly evening entertainment, which is very important for our elderly relatives. The hotel was clean, and the reception areas nicelly decorated. The access for the disabled is quite limited we could only find one level entrance through the dining room. The back entrance from the car park is a bit grim and does not give best impression of hotel. The lifts are decidedly pokey and not for the claustrophobc. Our room was clean and spacious but there were bits that were in need of updating. One bonus having our teenage daughter with us was that the family room was a double with a single off it - same bathroom but gave us all a bit of space. The food was good, with some good choices for vegetarians, and always a cheese salad on offer if the main course was not to my liking. The staff were all lovely, and the entertainment was good. All in all a nice hotel, in need of a bit of tlc but would certainly recommend particularly for elder clientele ( though not severely disabled), and good value for money.

The staff and the hotel were lovely and reception sorted out a problem I had quickly and efficiently. The down side was the food, we had the same menu a few weeks before at a Bay hotel on the isle of Wight and it was great. The food served at the Burlington was horrible and most of the time I couldn't eat it even the salad that was served the lettuce and other leaves were all brown and nasty if they get a new cook I would give it a much higher rating, and the rooms and seating areas would benefit from having fans as the windows were fixed only to open a little and in the heat we have just experienced it was very uncomfortable upstairs and down.
Also would management please stop guests from smoking right outside the main doors where it blows in and everyone has to breath it yuck !!!!!

Took my elderley mother away and it was the ideal resort and hotel.
hotel perfectly situated for everything, prom, pier, bus stops and the town with a great shopping centre.
Reception was excellent, nothing was too much trouble. Food was very good , the dining room staff were very polite and most attentive.
would most definately recommend this hotel and Eastbourne for a holiday.
Also if anyone gets the chance, go with Shearings coach holidays as we did, we were very impressed with everything overall , and our driver, Tony made our trips entertaining and very interesting.
