Chelmsford Star Searches for its 10th Charity of the Year!

Local Co-operative Society, Chelmsford Star has embarked on its annual search for its ‘Charity of the Year’ initiative to commence in May 2016.

The scheme is now in its 9th year and has raised to date nearly £275 000 for Essex charities.

Pauline Dodd, Society President said;

‘We are currently looking for local registered charities to put themselves forward as potential candidates backed up with a two page A4 document in support of who they are and what the funds are required for.

As the Society trades from 49 branches from Braintree to Southend-on-Sea, candidates must be able to demonstrate that their cause would be recognised by customers across all stores and be able to provide collecting tins featured for 150 till points.

The submission deadline is the 14th February, after which a short list of potential candidates is compiled and the Society’s 850 colleagues are asked to vote on their preference.

The name of the charity with the most votes is declared at the annual general meeting on 9th May, 2016. The Society and its new partner will then work together on fund raising ideas for the year, including

Chelmsford Star is now more than half way through with this year’s nomination, Southend and Chelmsford Mind, a local provider of mental health services.

Ken Sanderson, Chief Executive Officer for the charity commented;

“We were delighted to have been chosen as Chelmsford Star’s ‘Charity of the Year’. The money will make a great difference to our charity as although we are a member of the national Mind Federation, we do not receive any funding support. Your donation will enable us to develop new services to meet the growing needs of the local community. This includes services for schools and teenagers around areas such as; exam pressure and cyber bullying.”
