The Perils of Not Making a Will: What did Amy Winehouse, Aretha Franklin, Prince and Bob Marley have in common?
You’d be surprised how many people say to me: “I know I should do a Will, Andy. I just haven’t got around to it.”
I always reply with the same thing: “You’re not alone—but let’s not make you another cautionary tale.” Because even some of the most successful people in the world have died without a Will, leaving their families to pay the price. Here are some shocking celebrity real-life examples:
🟣 Prince
Prince died suddenly, leaving behind an estate worth over $150 million.
He had no Will. Result? Six years of court battles, millions in legal fees, siblings fighting over control, and the taxman taking a big slice. His wishes for his legacy? No one knows.
🟣 Aretha Franklin
The Queen of Soul passed away without a formal Will.
Family members found handwritten notes in a couch cushion. Years of court hearings followed to decide which, if any, were valid. In the end, it took five years—and a lot of legal costs—to agree on anything.
🟣 Bob Marley
Diagnosed with terminal cancer, Marley still didn’t make a Will.
He had 11 children with different partners. After he died, his family spent decades in court, fighting managers and each other over royalties and image rights. More than 30 years after his passing, disputes over his estate continued between his widow, children, and other relatives. There were allegations of fraud, lawsuits among family members, and expensive litigation over who should control his musical legacy. Even now, Marley’s estate remains a cautionary tale of how dying intestate can fracture families and consume fortunes in legal costs.
🟣 Amy Winehouse
Amy died aged just 27. No Will.
Her entire estate went automatically to her parents. Minus a huge chunk of Inheritance Tax paid to the taxman which could have been mitigated if planned in a properly structured Will.
Nothing for friends, charities she supported, or anyone else she might have chosen.
💬 What’s the lesson here?
It doesn’t matter how much you have.
Without a properly written Will, the law decides who inherits.
✅ It could mean family fighting in court.
✅ Huge legal fees and delays.
✅ Loved ones missing out.
✅ The wrong people getting everything.
It can be heartbreaking to see families torn apart at what’s already a difficult time.
🛡️ “I Just Want It to Be Simple”
That’s exactly what a proper Will does.
It makes things simple for the people you leave behind.
It says clearly:
✔️ Who gets what
✔️ Who is in charge
✔️ How you want things done
It protects your loved ones from conflict, stress, and unnecessary expense.
