The second meeting of the season saw the first of our Business Club sponsored races. As part of the Business Club membership, the racecourse is offering 5 races throughout the season that are available for naming by a member.
We are holding a draw at the beginning of each month to see who wins this privilege and the first company to benefit was James Brown (Insurance Brokers) Ltd. A visit to the parade ring prior to the race was first on the agenda, with James and his wife, Rachel, taking on the responsibility of choosing the ‘Best Turned Out’ horse, this went to Withy Mills, a superb looking grey trained by Kevin Bishop.
The race was run at a fair gallop with finally Queen’s Grove coming out on top also trained by Kevin Bishop. The mare is a daughter of Just Jasmine, who won four times at Taunton during her racing career and has now produced 5 fillies that have gone on to race.
They are all owned by Mrs E K Ellis, who is 94 years young, and although she could not make it to the races was well represented by her family. Just Jasmine is a huge success story as she was purchased by Mrs Ellis for only £2000, and she insisted that the price included the delivery of the mare as well.
Her son said, whilst enjoying a celebratory glass of champagne “ It would be impossible to put a price on the enjoyment she has given us through her racing and breeding life, she is in foal again, and she is 20 years old now ” The race proved to be a great experience for both winner and sponsor and we look forward to welcoming both back to the racecourse in the near future.
