Some exposure to the sun is beneficial in boosting Vitamin D levels, lack of natural vitamin D can cause soft and weak bones. Vitamin D, however, is also naturally present in oily fish, red meat and eggs, so moderation in all things is the best policy.

The sun can cause of skin cancers when one is exposed to unprotected and lengthy exposure especially when the sun is at its hottest.Too much Ultraviolet (UV) Light from the sun can damage the DNA in our skin cells which can result melanoma.

In the UK almost 9 in 10 cases of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, could be prevented through enjoying the sun safely and avoiding (painful) sunburn. NB. Avoiding the use of sun-beds is also recommended.

Getting sunburn once every 2 years can triple one’s risk of melanoma.

How can we be safe in the sun?

It is relatively easy to protect yourself from sunburn when outdoors by not exposing yourself to the sun at the hottest part of the day and by using sunscreen products that will filter out the most harmful rays. Wearing a hat, especially for those of us with thinning hair is a sound precaution to take, a hat with a wide brim will also give protection to one’s face. Paying special attention to children and vulnerable people who have need of extra care so as not to fall victim of too much sun exposure is vital for their wellbeing.

Sun screen preparations are readily available.Seeking medical guidance of a Doctor – for those with other health problems that may be affected by too exposure to the sun, or a Pharmacist is recommended. However, in general terms SPF (Factor) 30 is the most common level for most people and most skin types. No sunscreen will block 100% of sun rays but SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 will block 97%, and SPF 50 will block 98% of damaging rays.

We are heading toward warmer and sunny weather, hopefully, and we are advised by the NHS and Cancer Research  to take care so that we may enjoy the fine weather without suffering unwanted consequences. It is important to enjoy the sunshine, it is good for the soul, without doing ourselves harm.

Enjoy the sunshine, safely.

The Best of Taunton and Bridgwater.
