PEOPLE from Somerset with an interest in knitting are invited to a workshop at a garden centre in the county next month (June, 2012).

The ‘How to make a Cushion Cover’ class takes place on Saturday, June 9 from 2pm until 4.30pm in the Craft Centre at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre near Taunton.

Miranda McPherson, Craft Centre Supervisor, explained: “We host the classes on a monthly basis for anyone who would like to learn how to knit covers for their cushions and add a personal touch to their homes. The club takes place on the second Saturday of every month.

“The classes will focus on the colour and the texture of the cover. People can choose several unusual and simple ways of including these in their knitting.

“During the classes, people will be shown how to use several stitching techniques, including bobble, brick, cable, geometric and sea flower.

“Varied lengths of King Cole merino wool and a 12 inch cushion pad needed for the class will be provided.”

The How to make a Cushion Cover classes cost £20 each and include tea or coffee and biscuits.

The specialist Craft Centre, which stocks everything from card-making kits to wool, was created to serve the needs of the area’s crafters. It has a programme of weekly and monthly workshops and regular demonstrations.

Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The award-winning, independent family-run garden centre was launched in 1982 and is run by the Bellman family with the help of nearly 100 staff. Some have been with the business for more than 25 years.

Miranda added: “The Craft Centre is located within the garden centre, which is open seven days a week with free all day parking. The Four Seasons restaurant offers hot and cold meals and the recently launched Pondside Café provides specialist coffee, pots of tea and homemade sponges.”

The How to make a Cushion Cover classes will take place at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre’s Craft Centre on the second Saturday of each month from 2pm until 4.30pm. The next class will take place on Saturday, June 9.
