Keyless Car Theft: A Personal Perspective From the Front Line

By Chris Heathcote, Managing Director, Triple Threat Security

Over the last few years, I’ve noticed a worrying trend—not just as the Managing Director of Triple Threat Security, but as a husband, a father and someone who has been in the security industry for a large part of my life. Keyless cars, once hailed as the height of convenience, have now become one of the biggest targets for organised criminal groups. I’ve seen firsthand how quickly and quietly these vehicles can be stolen, and I think it’s time people understood just how prevalent and sophisticated these crimes have become.

Why Keyless Cars Are Being Targeted

When manufacturers introduced keyless entry and push-button start systems, the aim was to make life easier for drivers. What many didn’t anticipate was how quickly criminals would exploit the technology.

Thieves no longer need to smash a window or hot-wire a vehicle. Today, they use relay devices—small pieces of equipment that amplify the signal from your key fob, even if it’s inside your house. One criminal stands near your property, another stands by your car, and within seconds they can unlock it, start it and drive away.

It’s slick, silent and often over before you even realise something is wrong.

What I’ve Seen on the Ground

Being in the security industry, I spend a lot of time dealing with the aftermath of these incidents. I’ve had conversations with clients who woke up to an empty driveway, neighbours who didn’t hear a thing, and individuals who assumed their advanced vehicle tech was impenetrable.

The part that hits hardest is how targeted these crimes have become. Thieves often scout neighbourhoods, identify the most desirable vehicles, and return days later prepared. It’s organised and professional—and that’s exactly why people need to take proactive steps to protect themselves.

It’s Not Just Luxury Vehicles

Many assume only high-end 4x4s, SUVs or prestige brands are at risk. The reality is much broader. Criminal groups are now going after everyday models—cars used for work, family life and daily commuting. For them, it’s business. For you, it’s disruption, expense and stress.

How You Can Protect Yourself

As someone who has spent years in HM Forces and in the private security sector, I believe prevention is always better than response. So here are a few practical steps you can take:

  • Keep your key fob in a signal-blocking pouch (Faraday bags are inexpensive and effective).
  • Use old-school deterrents like steering wheel locks—visible security makes thieves move on.
  • Consider driveway security: lighting, CCTV, and visible deterrents are more effective than people realise.
  • Update your vehicle’s software to ensure the latest manufacturer protections are active.
  • Don’t store your keys near doors or windows—that’s exactly where criminals expect them to be.
