I have read a few articles recently about Vitamin D, (including one in a broadsheet - the independent I think)
Vitamin D is essential for
Cellular Health - including breast, colon and prostate cancers
Bone Health -including osteoporosis, and hip fractures
Organ Health - high blood pressure, hypertension and heart disease.
Mental Health - SAD, PMS, depression and general mood
Autoimmune Diseases, Skin Disorders.
New research is showing that we need exposure to sunlight for our bodies to manufacture sufficient quantities of Vitamin D, it is very difficult to get enough from diet.
This research is suggesting that 5 minutes of unprotected UV exposure 2-3 times per week is necessary. Suncreams actually stop the bodies ability to manufacture vitamin D by up to 97%.
In winter it is equally important to get enough sunlight - however from October to May the sun is not strong enough in England.
Interesting and worth keeping an ear out as research continues to unfold.
