Quite by chance whilst on a course in the local area, I happened upon the building at King Square in Bridgwater.Drawn by it’s industrial and business heritage I had been looking at local architecture and property.  I’m Pam Bunbury - Lindsay, a property developer by trade, so this was a force of habit for me. Looking unloved and fairly run down, my eye lingered over the Georgian proportions, the scale of the property, the beautiful square it frames and the possibilities started to form in my head.  Fast forward to now, and with my partner Sean Lindsay, we bought the Grade II Listed building and started to uncover it’s history.

It has seen several iterations, as a house, and later a business, becoming home to a firm of Solicitors Barrington and Sons in 1926.  The brothers were John (known as Jack), and his brother Thomas James (known as Jim), who were in partnership with their father.  Jack was Clerk to the Bridgwater County Justices, the Somerset River Board, the Governors of the Dr Morgan School and the Bridgwater School for Girls. Jim succeeded his brother as Clerk to the Bridgwater County Justices and to the Somerset River Board and he was also Clerk to the Commissioner of Taxes, an appointment held for twenty years.  They also purchased No 11 Kings Square, and merged with another firm Scholfield Roberts and Hill, eventually becoming Barrington Scholfield.  Thereafter a period of decline came to this formerly busy property.  We found it in 2018 up for sale and in a sorry state.  Its part of a suite of Grade II Listed properties that formed the original Square built in 1807 to 1830 on the site of Bridgwater Castle.  Over time the houses either side were returned to residences and we felt this beautiful heritage building deserved the same.

On restoring the property many of the original fireplaces and features were uncovered, restored and now are ready to enchant a whole new generation.  The five apartments that have been created from the houses generous proportions are creatively themed to reflect the house and it’s local heritage.

From the washing copper to the elegant ceilings you will be delighted as you move about.  The history is all there to see and feel but with a modern and very sympathetic restoration to make your comfort and enjoyment a priority.  Nothing has been left to chance here, you can be assured of complete privacy and as all the apartments are on separate floors, the building is smart wired with the latest tech to allow keyless entry and it has a concierge to ensure the smooth running of the house.  All hygiene and bio security issues are covered here too, with hygiene friendly keyless entry and rigorous cleaning standards throughout, contact with other guests is kept to a minimum, observing all Covid 19 protocols.

I like to think of the concierge as our modern day Butler, and service here is no problem at all, anything you require from conference tables to catering can be sourced locally from our range of top quality partners.  Breakfast can be provided, a chef can cook for you, a local partnership with a restaurant will see you catered for anytime you need it, we really do give a full service to your staycation or business engagement.  Smart TV’s can be linked to your own laptops, tablets or phones ensuring that you can work easily from here, host meetings and conferences from here or Zoom in comfort.

Don’t forget that you can bring your best friend too, the apartments are all pet friendly and the concierge can arrange dog walking services if you should want them.

Many other services are on hand if you require them, we have local partnerships with a Vineyard, a local hotel and a local restaurant and cocktail bar.  If you want it, we can get it, this is serviced accommodation at it’s best.  The position of the house in the centre of historic Bridgwater is key too, you are minutes from the M5, or the coast of Somerset, the Mendips are on your doorstep and if you want to cross the border into Dorset, the magnificence of the Jurassic Coastline and The South West Coastal Path are all in your grasp.  Not to mention Exmoor and all it’s wonders waiting to be found.  Country Pubs, glorious walks and views that are so beautiful, you will want to keep coming back.

We can be found on and via our website and you can find us on all social media too.

The house will be opening very soon and we would like to thank all the local trades and skilled workmen and women that have been an integral part of this restoration and new beginning for King Square Apartments.   We have been delighted to work with SLC Carpenters, George Allan Architects and Consultants and Carol Borrett, Interior Design.

I hope you will come and find us, stay with us and want to come back again and again.
