With heatwaves reported to continue until late August this year we can look forward to relaxing in the garden and days at the beach. But what about those hot stuffy, sleepless nights.

With air conditioning seeming an unaffordable luxury to most of us, we need to think around how we can cool our homes, and ultimately enjoy a restful night's sleep.

So what is the most efficient way to cool down our sleeping areas?

Open as many windows, and internal doors as you can to allow a free flow of fresh air around your home, particularly upstairs as these will be the warmest rooms in your home. Many people don’t realise they have a night-vent position on their windows, specifically for this.

Reflect the heat:

One of the biggest impacts you can have on cooling your rooms is to prevent the buildup of heat in the first place. An easy way to achieve this is by keeping your blinds/curtains drawn during the hottest parts of the day, or your could consider upgrading to modern energy efficient A rated glass which actually reflects the sun out of your home, keeping it cooler inside.

Move the air:

Oscillating fans are great for this. Although make sure it is moving fresh air (by opening your windows) ensuring you are not just moving warm air around your rooms.

If you are interested in upgrading your glass to be more energy efficient, but don’t want to go to the disruption of installing new windows. Then we at Fenestra Glazing, think we have the perfect solution.

We can replace just the glass (sealed units) within your windows, to A rated energy efficient glazing. Special coatings such as planitherm and low-e will reflect the sun’s heat away from your home.

And even better, we can install integral blinds into the centre of your glass. Not only is this stylish and practical all year round, it has the added benefit that you can both close your blinds (blocking out the sun), and open your windows to allow fresh air to circulate at the same time - the perfect combination in a heatwave.

But it gets even better, it’s not just great for the summer, that same glass will keep the heat in your home in the winter. It’s a win-win.
