Ok, let’s park up the Raleigh Chopper, switch off that episode of Catweazle, put away the plate of Vesta Beef Curry, crack open a can of Double Diamond, light up a Manikin cigar (well, perhaps not in the theatre!) and head out for an evening of hilarious, nostalgic and astonishing storytelling and songs.
Norfolk storyteller, Andrew Brammer is bringing his new show, ‘Stumpy Sanderson’s 1970s Jamboree Bag’, to The Quay Theatre on Saturday 16th August.
Andrew’s stories, which he has been performing on stage since 2009, are all about the outrageous, hair-raising and anarchic japes, scrapes and capers of a gang of mischievous working-glass boys growing up in the 1970s truck-making town of Dunstable. These stories include such outlandish tales as, ‘The Incredible Shrinking Stumpy’, ‘The Strange Case of Smiler Morton’, ‘Two Merry Monks and Two Pairs of Clackers’, ‘Chutney Barton Gets His Euphonium Out’, and ‘A Supermarket Fate Worse Than Death’.
The stories were all written by gang leader, Stumpy Sanderson, and were discovered within two time capsules that were buried in 1979 and 1983. The first capsule was an old Watney’s Party Seven can and the second one an old Courage Jackpot Bitter Party can. There were also two old Memorex cassettes containing recordings of Stumpy’s songs, which he had bashed out on an acoustic guitar.
In all, Stumpy wrote forty-four stories and composed fifty-five songs, and Andrew will be dipping into this veritable jamboree bag of material for the show.
Here are just some snippets of what people have said about Andrew’s shows:
“We loved it - haven’t laughed like that for ages. Brought back lots of wonderful memories.”
“Beautifully delivered. If you happen to be a child of the 70s, you will experience some unbelievable nostalgia served up by a master of his craft!”
“I was crying with laughter.”
“No one is doing what Andrew is doing.”
Andrew also releases the stories on podcast, and Series One of ‘Stumpy Sanderson’s 1970s Stories’ podcasts regularly charted in the UK Comedy Fiction Podcast Charts, and Series Two has now just started. He also has a weekly radio show, ‘Stumpy Sanderson’s ‘70s Stories’, on Poppyland Radio.
