September in Sudbury always sneaks up on me. One minute it's the summer holidays, the next the Quay's autumn season is in full swing, and it’s time for our Heritage Open Days. So I've had a proper dig through what's on around the town this month, and pulled out the things that feel worth getting in the diary
Here's my pick.
The Quay's programme this month is a real mixed bag of sweeties, which I love.
Bedroom Farce (Tue 8 Sept) - Sudbury Dramatic Society doing Ayckbourn. Always a good local turnout for these. Perfect for some theatrical silliness.
Burn Baby Burn: LA Inferno + post-show talk (Wed 16 Sept) - a new play about the LA wildfires, with a discussion afterwards. Not your usual Wednesday night, in a good way.
Robbie Gladwell & Friends (Sat 19 Sept) - this one always sells well, 60 years of music in one night.
Ginger Giggle Comedy Club (18+) launches (Tue 22 Sept) - brand new monthly comedy night at the Quay. Worth keeping an eye on if you fancy a regular laugh.
WOT? Italian (Thu 24 Sept) - Off-the-wall comedian (& one of my favourites) Boothby Graffoe and Italian guitarist Antonio Forcione doing music and comedy together, which is a genuinely odd and brilliant combination. An absolute must!
The Churchfitters (Fri 25 Sept) - folk-roots band, nothing to do with churches or fitting (their words, not mine).
Chris North - The Mentalist (Wed 30 Sept) - mind games and general baffling.

Writing Workshop with author Julia Stone continues (Sat 19 Sept) - part of an ongoing six-part series.
Craft Fair (Sunday 13th) - Free entry and enjoy a day filled with lovely homemade things. It’s inside, so it doesn’t matter what the weather’s doing outside

This is the one I always tell people not to sleep on, because it's free and it's genuinely fascinating even if you think you know Sudbury inside out.
Sudbury: How Industry Shaped Our Town (Sat 19 Sept, 12:30pm) - a guided walking tour with Blue Badge Guide Claire Partner, meeting at the Gainsborough statue on Market Hill. Silk, wool, brick-making, the market that's been trading for a thousand years - it's a proper reminder of what this town is built on.
There's a wider "free to explore" trail running across the festival too, coordinated by the Town Council, so worth a look at what pops up.
The Farmers' Market usually falls on the last Friday of the month, so I'd pencil in Friday 26 September. You’ll find a great selection of locally grown produce and other treats on Market Hill.
And don't forget the regular Town market taking place on Market Hill, every Saturday and Thursday (As it has been since before the Doomsday book)
That's my pick for September - a good mix of the reliably brilliant and the "well, that's different" (an Italian guitarist and a comedian walk into the Quay...). As ever, worth double-checking times and booking status before you head out, some of the smaller workshops fill up fast.
