There is something special about hearing live music in a pub when it is done properly. Not a big stage or a noisy crowd, but good musicians, a quiet room and people who have come to listen.

That is what is happening at The Fox in Bulmer, where live music nights are back on the last Friday of every month.

Local blogger and podcaster Andy is turning the pub’s long snug into a small listening room, hosting independent artists and singer songwriters from across the UK, creating a relaxed space where the music comes first and the audience really connects with the performer.

There is no stage so the artist and the audience are on the same level, which gives the evening a very different feel. It is closer to the old coffee house folk sessions than a traditional gig, and that is very much the point.

These nights are run for love, not profit. Musicians are paid directly from ticket sales, which matters at a time when online streaming gives so little back to the people creating the music.

The Fox is the perfect venue for it. A proper village pub, warm and welcoming, where you can settle in for the evening and enjoy something a bit special.

Seating is close and informal, with a mix of sofas and chairs arranged so everyone can focus on the music. You will be welcomed in, introduced to the artist and to other guests, and made to feel part of the evening.

Most of the musicians may be new to you, but they are all well worth hearing live.
