Entertaining the kids over the summer holidays doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Infact, in Sudbury, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to free and low-cost activities that make the most of our town, local businesses and green spaces.
Whether you're after fresh air, a creative afternoon or a bit of local fun, here's a round-up of things to do in and around Sudbury this summer.
Pirates on the Stour – Bank Holiday Weekend
The River Stour Trust is hosting pirate-themed boat trips. Get the kids in costume and take to the high seas (well, the river). Book in advance here: Pirates on the Stour
Skate Happy – 10th August
Roller disco fun with a BOGOF ticket deal. Great way to burn off energy indoors. Details at Skate Happy
Gainsborough’s House – Tom Tuesday

My Pet Pals at Pets at Home

Summer Funday at Old Joe’s – 23rd August
Loads of fun planned, and while you’re there, why not give Crazy Golf a go? Keep an eye on their social media for more info
EO Escape Rooms
Fancy a challenge? Work as a team and see if you can beat the room. Great for older kids and teens. For info visit their website
Kingfisher Leisure Centre
Soft play for the little ones and swimming sessions for all ages. Check the Kingfisher's timetable for more.
Great Cornard Leisure Centre – Swim Pass
£12 for unlimited swimming per child until the end of August. A great offer. Find out more
Water Meadows Walk
Grab a picnic and head to the meadows. It’s free, beautiful and right on our doorstep. Keep an eye out for cows.
Valley Trail Walk or Cycle
Start from the Waitrose car park and follow the trail to Long Melford. It’s mostly flat, off-road and full of wildlife. Once you get to the end, you’ll have earned a drink, so we suggest heading into Nethergate Brewery for a refreshing pint or soft drink in their taproom.
Friars Meadow Picnic
Pack up a picnic and head to Friars Meadow, just off the town centre. It’s a peaceful spot by the river, great for kids to run around, skim stones and enjoy a bit of nature close to home.
Rodbridge Corner Picnic Spot
A lovely little wildlife area between Sudbury and Long Melford. Great for bug hunts and bird spotting.
The Talbot Trail
Pop into the Tourist Information Office (entrance via Gaol Lane) and pick up a guide to the Talbot Trail. It’s a brilliant way to explore Sudbury’s history with kids.
Take the Train on the Gainsborough Line
Hop on the train at Sudbury and head along the scenic Gainsborough Line to Marks Tey. There are plenty of places to stop along the way:
Bures – A quiet village with a lovely park, and if you’re feeling adventurous, take the walk to the Bures Dragon on the hillside.
Chappel & Wakes Colne – Home to the East Anglian Railway Museum. They often run special events, including visits from Thomas the Tank Engine. Check their website to see what’s on.
It’s a relaxed, fun day out and a great way to explore somewhere new without needing the car.
Paddleboarding on the River Stour
Hire a board and explore from a different view. Don’t forget to give way to boats and wear a buoyancy aid.
Bus Roulette
Hop on a local bus, ideally upstairs at the front, and see where you end up. Bring snacks, water and a sense of adventure.
Can you recommend an activity that's cheap and fun? Get in touch and I'll add it!
Have a great Summer
Hello! I'm Penny from thebestof Sudbury, shouting about the best local businesses from Hadleigh through the Clare. When I'm not doing that, you'll find me knitting socks or tending to my 6 chickens
