Now the playing surface needs replacing, and the club has set itself an ambitious fundraising target of up to £250,000.
The money raised will go towards providing a new, high-quality playing surface, helping AFC Sudbury continue to support its teams and wider community use of the stadium for years to come.
To mark the launch of the Crowdfunder, AFC Sudbury is inviting supporters and the wider Sudbury community to the club on Saturday 10 October.
Anyone supporting the campaign can enjoy free entry and parking for the Men's First Team match against Gorleston.
There will also be music, ice creams and activities, with the club hoping to make a real day of it.
Between 12pm and 1pm there will be a Happy Hour, with £1 off every hot food or alcoholic drink purchased.
It is also a chance to find out more about the pitch project, why the work is needed and the difference a new playing surface will make to the club and its community.
The club is also applying for grants to help fund the new pitch. Raising money through the Crowdfunder could play an important part in unlocking further funding, particularly where match funding is required.
That means even smaller donations can help towards the bigger £250,000 goal.
And you don't necessarily need to donate to help. Sharing the campaign with friends, family, colleagues or local businesses could help AFC Sudbury reach more people who want to support the project.
AFC Sudbury is encouraging the whole town to get behind the campaign and help secure a pitch that can continue to be used by its teams and the wider Sudbury community.
