I spent Christmas 2011 at the Duke of Richmond again. Several other guests had come back for their fourth or fifth visit. As ever, the staff from the manager, Stephen Purtill, downwards went to great trouble to ensure everyone had a great time. The fact that many of the staff have been there for many years shows they are happy, and happy staff result in good service and happy customers. I hope that the take-over by the Red Carnation Group gives this great team many opportunities to show how good a hotel can be. My concern is that the new owners will raise the price with few extra benefits.

Wheel-chair accessibility is good between the better bedrooms, the dining room and bar. However access from the lobby to the lift need a ramp to be put in place, while the residents' lounge can only be reached by climbing about six steps.

Finding your room was an adventure in itself, the hotel is old & in places it does show. The room was comfortable & quite large. The restaurant was very good, the food & service excellent. Overall a good place to stay.

I stayed here for 1 night on business, the room although clean was so so not the best equiped and a little aged.
Breakfast was good but average. i did not eat here in the evening so cannot comment fully on the food. I did not use the pool as the weather was poor on my visit.

Everything about the roomwas fine, although the bed was slightly small from where we stayed two weeks previously...I like the girls knocking on our door around 6:30 pm offering all sorts (toiletries, packet powdered beverage and selections of cookies) from their trays of goodies. The hotel bar was excellent..quaint and cozy...with the lovely George serving us most of the time...he also looks after the people dining @ the terrace...i had a super fillet steak, beautifully cooked just how i like with side dishes of my choice...my husband and anoTher friend had a mexican dish...generous portions and scrumptuous till their hearts content...and Pat had Seafood Linguini,Good choice with good helping of king prawns...The last dinner of our stay, George made a special request to the Chef to make us a variety of Seafood Platter...ahhhh! It was Superb meal...shame about the wireless that keeps cutting off and not connecting quite often...waste of money....which we found out that the new management is not going to charge the use of Wi-fi in the future...all in all, we left happy and had good memories of our stay in the Duke of Richmond and guernsey itself...

Our stay during October 2011 was absolutely fantastic. The staff is friendly, the breakfasts are awesome, and the overall ambiance is quiet and relaxing. Definitely 5 stars.

We loved staying at the Duke of Richmond Hotel! The staff was outstanding. The meals were excellent. I loved the breakfast variety, and their mushroom truffel soup was some of the best I'd ever had. The rooms were comfortable and well kept. St. Peter Port and Guernsey are a great place to visit, and I think you would be well advised to stay at the Duke of Richmond Hotel.

We have stayed at the Duke of Richmond Hotel in St. Peter Port for many years and have always found the standard to be extremely high. The rooms are beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. The bathrooms are very up-to-date and well supplied. There is a choice between a bath and a shower and are extremely clean. The hotel is always well maintained and well re-furbished. The food is EXCELLENT and room service is of a very high standard. We always like to eat in the Cambridge Bar and the fillet steak is the very best we have tasted anywhere! The staff cannot do enough to help you and are very courteous and friendly. Some of the staff have been at this hotel for many years and greet you as they always remember you. We cannot praise this hotel highly enough and would recommend it to everyone.

We have stayed at The Duke of Richmond Hotel for more years than we care to remember as a couple and sometimes with the family. Over the years it has always proved to be a well managed hotel with very professional staff.
The location is ideal for access to the town which is only a short walk through Candie Gardens but be ready for the hill on the return journey.
From breakfast to dinner the food is of a high standard with good choices and you can have meals served in the bar which is in very capable hands. The terrace is a good place for tea, an early evening drink or even a meal when the weather is fine.
The cleanliness of the hotel has always been excellent both in the bedrooms and the public areas. A programme of refurbishment has been in progress for a couple of years.
Some of the staff have been at the hotel for many years and are eager to provide a high standard of service.
We have always been made very welcome on our returns and look forward to another visit in 2012.

What a lovely experience visiting the Duke of Richmond hotel. It certainly deserves more than 3 star in my view. My observations throughout my stay were of an extremely polite and pleasant crew who bent over backwards to help you. Everyone was a hive of activity at all times. The decor was of high quality and spotless and you could see the hotel manager noticing the tiny details.
My room was immaculate, all the mod cons and more.... It had a fridge with bottled water in, a thoroughly modern bathroom with a fantastic aqua lisa shower...great views - great quality curtains and bedding - a real treat.
I had a bar meal and chose a Thai dish - it was presented really well and tasted lovely. The bar manager, who I saw quite often, was always busy seeing to customers’ needs - at a pace - typical of what I saw from all the staff.
The common rooms were light and airy and it felt like you could sit and watch the world go by whilst being serenaded with background music.
I was lucky to have hit on with fabulous weather and outside the hotel had a large patio area and a pool.... When I did drag myself away from the hotel it was a really pleasant and short walk through Candie Gardens into town.
I will be back - it felt like a dream.

A short stop over this time, just wish we could have stayed longer! Couldn't recommend a better hotel for any type of visit to Guernsey. The hotel was spotless and staff as friendly as ever. We look forward to our next visit!

Stayed with my sister and disabled mother for four nights. The staff were very friendly and helpful as my sister and I asked to change from a double room to twin room upon our arrival. This was done very quickly and we were very pleased with the large twin room we were allocated. A few problems parking near the hotel every night, despite having a disabled badge. The hotel has a few parking spaces in a car park opposite, but not enough during our stay and only one disabled bay on the street nearby. My mother had to use the service lift to get to her room. Breakfasts were very good, nothing was too much trouble for the restaurant staff. Outside pool was very clean. Overall a very pleasant stay and Guernsey is a very friendly island to visit.

We stayed here on a 3 nights for the price of 2 which was a good start. We dealt directly with the hotel people who arranged our flights as from Southampton and the transfers to and from the hotel. Everything went without a hitch even the weather (nice touch eh!) The staff are every bit as good as previous reviewers have already stated particularly Olga, the lady in charge of the waiters and waitress. The maitre d himself makes sure that all the guests are happy and that the wine is served at the right temperature (extremely important to me). The food is very well prepared and presented so the head chef is pretty good too. The scene in the bar is also very good so there is no need to go out at all in the evening unless you have something special in mind. Our room, a standard one was quite adequate but an upgrade would have provided more room I'm sure. The room itself was clean enough if a little old fashioned and the chambermaid called each evening to see if there was anything we needed replenishing. The town centre is only a short walk away, down through the park. Once there the shops are varied with a mixture of independant and familiar British chain stores. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants. You must try the "gache" currant bread (pronounced gosh) which is a very useful filler around mid-day and if you can find it "gache mellee" a kind of apple pie. Getting around the island is so easy on the buses, which only have one fare £1 or you can hire bikes. There doesn't seem to be any reason to hire a car at all. Finally one place that doesn't seem to on Tripadvisor is La Vallette Underground Military Museum located in St Peter Port just opposite the bathing pool. It's well worth a visit even if you are German.

If, like us, your enjoyment of a stay in a hotel depends upon friendly, efficient and good humoured staff, then the Duke of Richmond is for you. And the food is brilliant - we had half board, and really recommend it.

this was our first stay at the duke of richmond hotel. we loved it and we are defenitly going back once. everything was excellent from the moment we checked in till the moment we checked out. when we arrived at the reception they were very friendly and helpfull. we got a nice room on the second floor. the room was on the roadside but it didn't gave us any trouble at all because we slept very well for all the 5 nights. every morning we went to the restaurant for breakfast. the restaurant manager and the staff looked after us verry well. the menu for breakfast was good and we could make some changes on it as well. in the evening we had dinner in the bar, wich was very delicious and the price was very reasonable. I would like to make my compliments to the kitchen for this. after the dinner we went back to our room and the housekeeping who already serviced our room did a very good job. later on in the evening we had some drinks in the very nice and cosy bar. the ambiance was very pleasant. the barmanager was very kind and he served us well. unfortunately the bar closed arround midnight wich was a pity but it wasn't a big deal at all because we could sit in the lounge after that.

to walk from the duke of richmond hotel to st peters port will take you about 10 to 15 minutes wich is a nice and pleasant walk. in st peter port are lots of things you can do, like shopping or have a drink on one of the terraces. a good idea is to take the bus that goes all the way arround the island wich is a nice tour.

everything together makes the duke of richmond hotel an excellent hotel with a very friendly staff from housekeeping staff to restaurant staff. the food they serve is delicous. in our experience the hotel should be a 5 star hotel and we are definitely going back once.

Have been staying at the Duke of Richmond with my family for the last 7 years for our holidays and have known Guernsey for the last 40 years and have never found a better situated hotel, more friendly staff, good food and an overall good management.

Would recommend it to anyone.
We will certainly be returning in the near future.

Hotel is in a nice location (5 minutes to town) with a lovely view over the bay below. We had booked a family room, so that our son could sleep in a separate area and we were given a fantastic two room studio with lounge/kitchen on one side and large bedroom on the other. Rooms aren't particularly new, but as they are not worn out, it really didn't matter.

The hotel only has four carparks but it was actually rather easy to find on-street parking nearby.

High above St Peter port, the Duke of Richmond hotel sits adjacent to a park in a quiet residential area. A steep walk up hill to the hotel, (but an OK walk back to town) or a short bus/taxi ride either way. (Use of a taxi or hire car is suggested for arrival) ! Our room was large & nicely furnished, the public areas however look a little tired. The hotel was a good choice however, and we'd return if the price was right; the one downside for us was that their safe deposit facility (located at the Reception) consisted of just sealed bags in the hotel safe (nothing in the guest room, nor individual safe deposit boxes available) which we found inadequate for our purposes due to the fragile nature of some items and the need to regularly access them (no laptops or cameras fit for example). The staff were lovely and everyone was welcoming and friendly.

The top feature of this hotel is the excellent restaurant service which would rival that of many high class hotels. The head waiter was charming. The head waitress is outstanding and leads her team very well -all incredibly polite and attentive. The restaurant food is extremely good too with a good table d'hote menu each night and some really exceptionally good dishes. Breakfast is cooked to order and there is an excellent continental buffet too.

The room was fine - pristine in terms of furnishings and cleanliness. The bathroom was also pristine. The fittings are somewhat dated - ie a bath with old type over- bath shower attachment and plastic curtain but it all worked perfectly well. I understand a programme of refurbishment is underway. I hope the refurbishment will include air conditioning or at least a fan. The room was uncomfortably hot during the night and this was with daytime temperatures outside of 16-20. I hope it will also address the sound proofing situation. Presumably because of the age of the doors and walls there was a problem with noise at night. Doors closing and footsteps along the corridor were all too audible in the room.

The hotel is situated in a lovely area (in fact St Peter Port does not seem to have any unlovely areas), opposite a park, just round the corner from the fantastic Art and History Museum and a pleasant 15-20 minute stroll from the restaurants and shopping area. Uphill on the way back so in the evenings we took a taxi back.

There is a very pleasant heated outdoor swimming pool. But a slight disincentive to evening use was the fact that one had to arrive and leave rather publicly through the terrace bar area! Even so I imagine it would be great for families.

Only problem was late (30 minutes) delivery of room service breakfast on Sunday, our last day before leaving for our flight. Not ideal. This was apparently due to the number requiring breakfast half an hour before the restaurant opened (8am). If this is a regular occurrence they should perhaps consider opening the restaurant at the same time as the other days (7.30). But maybe we were just unlucky.

This was a lovely hotel, impeccably kept with solid old fashioned values and service. Long may it continue.

What a gem we found in Guernsey, From the minute we arrived, until we had to depart, we received outstanding service from all the staff we came in to contact with. Nothing seemed to much trouble for any of the staff, the ambiance and all round comfort of the hotel made this an outstanding weekend away, and one that will stay long in the memory.
Our room was comfortable and contained everything you could need during your stay, although it overlooked the road, we didnt hear any traffic noise, even with the windows open.
We ate in the bar on our first evening, the menu, service, and food were excellent, the bill was even pleasent !!
I have to point out that the service on both mornings in the restaurant was superb, the hotel was busy, but the service and speed of service, quality of food and attention to detail, would have put many 5 star establishments to shame.

We were on a short 3 night break and found the staff here lovely (especially Olga at breakfast and Orlando in the bar). We did not like the location of our allocated room as it was roadside and a little noisy. The Reception team did not hesitate in moving us to a room overlooking the terrace and sea. Breakfasts were superb. It was an easy stroll into town. Would certainly stay here again if in St Peter Port.

Stayed at this hotel as a business person. Location is brilliant.
Found the Public areas rather Old Fashioned.
Room was ok and clean. Stayed in many hotels and think hotel is over
overpriced. Found hotel Staff ok, but at times not genuine.
I felt like I was just being processed. Also member of hotel staff was
pressure washing terrace area at 730.am !
Rather a mixed bag. Better hotels on the islands and for the Price.
Some of the Staff seemed pompous!

It's cleanliness, excellent service, excellent cuisine lead to a thoroughly enjoyable break in Guernsey.

We were a group of over 60 people, with varing needs and the hotel responded excellently to our requests while remaining friendly and welcoming and professional.

This currently has 4.5 stars on Trip Advisor, but I think this is overly generous. We visited stayed at this hotel for 1 night, and 2 nights at Le Friquet a couple of miles away. Le Friquet (which also has 4.5 TA stars) is much superior.

The room we had in the Duke of Richmond was a bit drab and dated. Apparently there are refurbished rooms available but we told the charge would be £20 extra, and what we paid wasn't exactly cheap. The bed was fine and reasonably large, but the bathroom was dingy and quite unattractive. The TV was the size of a large postage stamp.

We dined at the hotel and the food was very good. In fact, the dining room was airy, nicely set out and the staff very friendly. But it was a fair bit more expensive than the food at Le Friquet and not so much choice.

The location of the hotel is at the top of a hill about 0.75 miles (10 minute walk to town; 20 minute walk back!) from the centre of town, and really difficult to find by car. We went round in circles for 20 minutes before we asked for directions.

Overall, we were a bit disappointed after staying at Le Friquet, which was cheaper but better quality.
