Wow! What an amazing sight along the seafront last Saturday as hundreds of lighted torches were carried like a sea of fire from Marine Parade to the Wish Tower with thousands of spectators cheering them on. The procession was led by Eastbourne Bonfire Society’s patron Stephen Lloyd MP wearing the Society’s colours with his torch held high.
This year’s theme was the centenary of the Great War and a field of poppies illuminated the beach, with two minutes silence and the last post sounded by Alan Archer of the Kingfisher Scout Band, the bonfire was lit and one of the town’s most spectacular firework displays ever seen lit up the sea and sky in a blaze of colour.
“This was again a fantastic bonfire celebration for Eastbourne and it gives our members the greatest pleasure to see the thousands of spectators being thrilled by this festival of fire.”
“The event was the result of hard work and planning by our members aided by our sponsors.”
“Eastbourne Bonfire Society have come a long way since re-kindling in 2001 in Old Town, moving to the promenade some years later and now our 4th year along the roads of the seafront with our bonfire and fireworks on the beach.”
A huge thank you to Eastbourne Borough Council, Frontier Fireworks, our many sponsors, volunteer marshals and collectors, St John’s Ambulance and the emergency services.
“The bucket collection raised £2,655, Charlies YMCA and Eastbourne Area Epilepsy Group will share 40 percent, the remainder going towards funding next year’s event.”
“The Society is looking for local charities to benefit from next year’s event so if you are involved with a charity which would like to be considered please apply in writing to The Secretary, Eastbourne Bonfire Society, The Crown & Anchor, 15-16 Marine Parade, Eastbourne BN21 3DX.”
Anyone who would like to become a member of EBS is welcome to come along to our next meeting at The Crown & Anchor, 7.30 pm Monday, 13th October. Full details on our website www.eastbournebonfiresociety.com.
