Why a local charity is providing a fresh approach to home care

Possability People is a Sussex charity that supports disabled people and people who live with long term health conditions or impairments. We do that through a range of services and programmes that enable thousands of people to live independently, with dignity and without prejudice.

Our job is to support you, or your family or friends, to live safely and independently at home. We are proud of our highly skilled, experienced and very capable care team. We call our carers Personal Assistants (PAs).

With over 20 years of service providing experience, we know about budgeting, the local scene, and the importance of the right support so you can get on with living your life as you want.

Possability People: At Home have organised support for Marcus since 2019.

“One of the problems was I work. Previous times [with the previous carers] were inappropriate for me because I need to get to work by a certain time. It didn’t go particularly well for a few weeks until Possability People came in and they agreed to the times that I needed. Possability People are my knights in shining armour” he said.

Marcus is a Senior Contact Centre Executive for a warranty company. One of the difficulties he experienced in the past was organising support at the right time to enable him to be in work on time.

He continues

“It enabled me to get to work on time and also to go to bed at a reasonable time. Not too early, because obviously when you work, you don’t want to come home and go straight to bed. See, that’s not nice. The team sorted out the times of my PAs.”

As well as supporting Marcus to live independently, Possability People helped in other ways, fixing things around the home to make life easier. We organised things like hoists and kitchen equipment with lowered surfaces so that Marcus can cook and use the kitchen. Marcus’ PAs are happy to be flexible and work to suit his needs. Sometimes he will ask calls to be earlier or later, allowing him to live life the way he chooses.

Having care for the first time, or changing care service, is an incredibly personal, maybe daunting task for most people. No two clients are the same, which is one of the things our brilliant care team (PAs) love about their job.

They have a great deal of experience in supporting people who have a whole range of different needs, including support for people who have complex packages of care organised.

We support clients with age related impairments, complex mental health, learning disabilities and physical and sensory impairments with things like:

Domestic duties

  • Washing and cleaning
  • Meal planning & prep
  • Shopping

  • Application of ointments
