Thanks to the incredible efforts of Malcolm Richards, 1,737 people, including 636 children, have received at least three days’ emergency food from the Hailsham Foodbank.

The Community Hero Award is sponsored by Welbeing, the specialist provider of independent living services and the Sussex Express. The award honours unsung local heroes who help make their community a better place to live.

Malcolm recruited a team of volunteers and with the further help of Tesco, Asda, Waitrose and other residents he was able to build up a bank of food. He then worked with care agencies to identify people in crisis who would benefit from what the foodbank could offer.

Charlene Saunders, Marketing Manager at Welbeing, said:

“The decision to give our first award to Malcolm was unanimous. He has made such a valuable contribution to the community.

“The foodbank represents a lifeline for people who need extra help and support, so we really couldn’t hope for a more worthy winner.”

With people and food supplies in place, Malcolm set about finding a suitable venue for people to come and not only collect their food parcels, but to chat with the volunteers and share a cup of tea. He also found a warehouse to store all the food and received a grant to buy a van.

Charlene added:
“The van allows Malcolm to deliver food parcels to people who live too far out or who are sick and the collection of food from various organisations. His determination to create the foodbank will mean more local people in genuine need will get the help they so desperately require.”

Malcolm is now looking forward to a complimentary meal for two at a local restaurant. If you would like to nominate someone for the Community Hero Award, please email angela@cobbpr.com with details of who you are nominating and why they deserve this recognition
