One Answer understand that people make mistakes and that sometimes this may impact on how simple it is to sort out basic tasks such as insuring your car. Even though you may have served your punishment, be it a custodial sentence, community service or points and a fine, you may find it challenging to find affordable insurance.

It is a legal requirement to have your car insured, and we are here to help, getting you back on the road as quickly as possible, so that you don’t spend more of your time and money than you need to.

When getting a quote for your car insurance, you will be asked whether you have had any motoring or non-motoring criminal convictions as these are rating factors on a policy and can ultimately affect the premium or sometimes even make it more difficult for you to get cover. Although this might at first appear to be a real problem with your insurance, over 11 million people in the UK have a criminal record, so you are not alone in this struggle!

What if I don’t disclose the conviction?

It might be tempting not to mention your conviction but even if you do not disclose it, Insurers are like to have access to this information and if they discover that you withheld the information, it could make your policy invalid.

If your policy is deemed invalid, or ‘void’, it is likely to be cancelled immediately without any refund and you would be still be liable for any cancellations cost. If in the event of a claim, you may not be covered for any vehicle damage or personal injury. This will also only increase the difficulty in obtaining insurance and increase your premiums going forward so get it right now and ensure you fully disclose everything.

Why use a broker?

When you use a broker, you are speaking to a real-life human who can search the market for you and help you find the right insurer, rather than a comparison website, which is always a bonus when you’ve most likely got several questions to ask and personal information to share! This means that you can have a proper conversation with an advisor regarding your convictions, who will be able to advise you on the most suited policy available at the most competitive price for you. As using a broker is a personal service, you can come away feeling confident that you’re sufficiently covered – ultimately, peace of mind is all we really hope to use an insurance policy for!
